This is my new Federation Deluxe with a very shallow pinch. I've broken it in, and it looks much more like an Indiana Jones fedora.

My old Federation that I used as a travel hat- this is in the British Museum.

I also recall seeing pictures of Howard Hughes wearing fedoras and bomber jackets on COW somewhere.

I have a black leather jacket that I wear with my fedoras -- either light or a dark gray, and also a black one or a red one. I love red and black together.

I would personally not wear brown and black together.

Even we gals are not immune to comments. When getting my car valet- parked at a nearby casino, one of the parkers, an older guy (I should say "dork") started pointing at the fedora I was wearing and hollering "Mafia, hey, it's the Mafia!" He said it over and over again. (Oddly, I had on a soft rose red fedora with a 2 inch brim, very modest looking and, because of the color, quite feminine.)

I got irritated with him and said, "you know you shouldn't insult the people whose cars you're parking -- see what kind of tip you get."

I think the guy did not have all the dots on his dice, laughing and pointing at my hat.

Mother thought it was because I was wearing sunglasses, but he was pointing at the fedora.

After seeing that Hughes pic, I am convinced that a black jacket can be pulled off with the right hat. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell if his hat is a black or gray. However that is definitely a good style of jacket to wear it with. This thread has made me want to go out and get the Aviator and see it again. Damn that man had style. But then again, who would have the nerve to tell Howard Hughes that he wasn't coordinating or didn't look good?

Ray-
The new Akubra looks awesome. I'm planning on getting a Federation Deluxe myself (after I ask you a few questions, I'll hit you up on AIM sometime). And you already know I live that nutty pic with the big bird. :)

Look everyone, Ray found the Maltese Falcon's mama!!

Like so many other things, the trick is to simply be comfortable with what you're wearing. If YOU know you look good, you will look good to others. If you are not comfortable with what you're wearing, you will look uncomfortable or out of place to others.

Think Howard Hughes worried about whether his hat went with his jacket? I don't.

I definitely agree with Pilgrim here, and I think everyone else will too. When I walk into Wal-Mart wearing a 60 year old suit and high crown fedora, sure everyone looks. But they're just jealous because they're all wearing sweatpants and shirts with idiotic sayings on them. However, I don't make it common practice to dress formally in Wal-Mart... not yet anyway. I just think to myself that all these people see me and feel bad becasue they look like slobs. I'm helping them!

So, coming into medias res I have a style question about combining a hat, let´s say a white borsalino or a sand-coloured Akubra-hat (Lawson) with a black Leather-Jacket from Aero (Highwayman). ........ So I need your support. Do you combine your hats with black leather jackets - I mean in public? What kind of hats in which colors do you combine with this kind of clothes? Thx for your advices.

Hello and welcome to the Lounge.

I have both black and Brown leather coats, based on my experience, here are my suggestions. By the way...I have never gotten a "Hey Indy" comment. But then again....my coats are not aviator style

If you want to simply get a hat that goes with both then a very dark olive green (so dark its difficult to tell if its brown, black or green) This "all around" color works very well.

If you are looking at if you should wear the hat and coat combo and are trying to please your girlfriend, perhaps try a style with a smaller brim so that you look less "Idny- like". You can also wear a coat that isn't cut in a bomber/aviator style and avoid that as well. Or wear what you want...and get a new girlfriend. lol

Lastly you can simply wait. Yes I said wait....because if you hang around here long enough you will have a dozen or so hats to choose from and it will no longer be an issue.

By the way...I wear a fedora of some kind 6 days out of 7 at least...in all styles of dress and types of weather.

My Best,

M

You are so right Mr_Misanthropy, I think the main thing is ''you'' have to be comfortable in whatever you are wearing. If you are confident in yourself and let it show you can wear almost any style. A fedora paired with nice pants and shirt has a certain classy look to it. I think that is one reason HRH always looked so cool even when he was dressed down.

I have to say, I do this, but I'm not totally comfortable with it just yet, I'm getting there, though. I'm weird, I guess. I will wear a polo-style, two or three button placket shirt, many days. I'll pair it with a fedora, but feel underdressed.

For full button dress shirts, I normally don't wear short sleeves, except on rare occasions. However with the long-sleeve dress shirt, especially with a button down collar, I am VERY comfortable in my fedora.

Go figure.

... Do you have the FQHH?
As I told, Munich is the capitol for show-offs - they need all kind of supply - and sometimes they even buy the good stuff. So we got a small, but very distinguished shop for advanced goods here, that is kept alive by Bikers and almostfamous people gasoline alley, which even serves totally customizable Aero-Jackets. They are ordered and tailored in Scottland (takes three weeks from order to delivery). This is where I got mine.

Ghos7a55assin,

How nice to see someone as young as yourself taking a stand and dressing as you do - totally out of step with your peer group. I would imagine that in these days it is even more of a big step to take since most guys your age feel compelled to wear whatever happens to be 'in' currently Far more so than when I was your age ! Back then, being 'in' merely required one to grow ones hair as long as parents / school would permit and wear Levis jeans !!
I feel genuinley sorry for kids today who have to wear certain 'labels' to be accepted. Fortunately, both my daughters have grown up to be individuals with no interest at all in following the herd ! I applaud you:eusa_clap

I probably wear a felt or panama fedora, open road, or
homburg every day. When it's cold enough, I certainly
wear a hat with my leather (or denim or gabardine or satin or...)
jacket. The trick is, I never go to Walmart.

My question is, how do I attach a fedora to my
bicycle helmet so I can show a little class there, too?

Looking for some advice / opinions on which hat styles and color would suit the following leather jackets. Not trying to look like Indiana Jones. And this will be worn in NJ/NYC, so no country styles please. Ideally looking to buy 1 hat that will work with both but Im open to buying two colors. So far, I'm leaning toward the Akubra brand.

Dark Brown Long Halfbelt -
