Hello ladies

I thought you might be interested in a series that's currently showing on the BBC. It's called Style on Trial and each week takes a look at a different decade. Last episode was the 1940s and this week it's the 1950s. It had some great original 1940s footage of hair/fashion - including someone rolling up a pincurl and lots of tips on 'make do and mend'. For those of you who don't live in the UK you can watch it online at bbc.co.uk/iplayer but each episode will only be up for a week (I think you have until this Sat to watch the 1940s one). A lot of their footage comes from old Pathe newsreels - available for free from the Pathe website - it just takes a wee bit of searching to find what you want.

Sorry, didn't realise you couldn't watch BBC Iplayer outside of the UK - assumed cos it was online you'd be able to see it anywhere! I did a search on www.britishpathe.com and was able to find some of the newsreels they ran on the show. Hopefully these will work!

you should be able to watch the lo-res versions of the films for free (unless that's UK only too!).

It was a good program, but I was disappointed to see the 20's and 30's completely overlooked. Since it was a program about the most influential fashions of the past century discussed decade by decade, they should have started with the beginning of the century and not in 1940. However the part about the 40's was my favorite. But without the 20's and 30's, again, there's no much competition ...
