Stocking sizing?

I can't believe that I don't remember this from way back, when I wore stockings all the time! But I can't recall how the sizing works. I wear an 8 1/2 shoe (9 in a closed shoe) and I have long legs. For some dim reason I seem to recall buying 10 1/2 Longs--but, then again, maybe not!!! Could someone help?

Gosh, stockings are so confusing to me. I'm pretty short, 5'2", but have kind of long legs and big thighs (small calves though). I have size 6 feet and they are super narrow, but somehow I can fit a range of 8.5 to 10 Long!

It drives me absolutely crazy how differently each brand is sized sometimes!

It really is a matter of trial and error -- you can't always go by the marked size and expect it always to be the same from pair to pair. I've heard a general rule that your stocking size is supposedly 2 1/2 sizes bigger than your shoe size, but that doesnt work for me at all. I actually get the best result from going by my foot measurement -- my foot's about 10 1/2 inches long, and a size 10 1/2 stocking seems to fit pretty well.

As far as lengths go, don't forget to take the type of girdle you'll be wearing into account. Longer girdle = shorter stockings!

indeed. i wear a size 6 1/2 shoe and the best stocking fit for me is a 9 though a 9 1/2 works well and so does an 8 1/2.

Welcome! And thanks so much for posting this!! Well, my memory was correct--10 1/2 long when wearing a short girdle.

I know I tend to reminisce and tell quirky stories sometimes, but I will try to keep this one brief! I grew up wearing stockings from about age 13 (1953). A new type of stocking fabric had come out (mesh stockings) that stretched and, though I was not aware of it, would produce a little "ball" of the stretchy yarn if there was a pull or a snag. Our family went out to dinner for Easter, my first time wearing this type of hoisery, and my Mother put the fear of God in me to take care of the stockings OR ELSE! While waiting for my meal, I gently smoothed my hand over the stocking fabric and noticed a little pilled spot; so I pulled it, thinking it would come off. Of course, it didn't. It just kept coming and coming and soon I had a huge wad of the stuff in my lap! I was completely fascinated by it! As you might guess, when I stood up to leave, I realized I had unraveled the whole top of the stocking!! My sad little garter was only held on to a little strip of stocking and the next eight inches below that was exposed skin! Ah, the good ol' days!
