Stetson Number 1 Quality Campaign hat. Lot Number 4780. I haven't estimated a date for it yet, but it might be a little later than I was hoping for. I was hoping it was a WW1 hat. The smaller mfg tag is one of those brown tags or some obviously lighter colored tag than the other. After going back through this thread, I'm estimating this hat dates to ca. 1921. This is based on a hat on pg 15 of thread with Lot Number 5066 and the leather hatband has a 1922 date on it.

After going back through this entire thread again to refresh my memory, I see a hat on pg 14 of the thread with Lot Number 7710 that's dated Nov 1941. So hats with high 7000s Lot Numbers that I've tried to cram into being made in or before 1940 may actually have been made in 1941 or 1942, it seems. I just want to say that for the record.

Stetson Number 1 Quality. Lot Number 7479. The serial number on the sweatband begins with the letter G. There's no mfg tags in the hat.

Gosh, sorry I missed all the excitement over this post. I think it’s fascinating - those sweat stamps could easily have come from a subcontractor / sweatband manufacturer independent of Stetson or Stetson could have been manufacturing hats for other companies. I don’t think we can tell.

It‘s still super fascinating to see the stamp on another brand - and like you, I presume it is still associated with the dates we have established.

Daniel

PS Dude. Yes you over there in your basement - be nice.

"The Sheridan" model hat made for the Bloom Shoe & Clothing Co of Sheridan, Wyoming. It has a mfg tag for Thanhauser Hat Co, but it also has a Stetson Lot Number on the sweatband, Lot Number 224X, so Stetson must have made this hat. I think the hat dates approximately 1912 offhand, and I'm convinced it was made pre 1917 because of the Union label.

As I've said here or elsewhere, I believe we can tell, and the obvious conclusion is that Stetson was making hats for other companies. Otherwise you have to convince yourself that some unknown contractor, etc exactly copied every single facet of Stetson's labeling. We also know Stetson made hats for Miller Fine Hats of Denver Colo., per the about early 30's Miller I've posted on this page. And Stetson also made hats for Stockman-Farmer Supply of Denver, owned by the same owner of Miller Fine Hats, Phillip Miller.
