Stetson Sizing?

Getting back to your OP you've hit upon part of the problem that has developed with newer OR's as the crowns have gotten lower & lower. Some OR crowns now are as low as 5-3/8" open crown making them as low as 4" at the front dip which necessitates raising the dents higher so they don't touch your head. With just a bit of taper the hat is touching the sides & sitting on top of your head. The large deep elephant ear dents are impossible with anything under a 6" open crown. I don't think a conformateur measures it but I've had a custom hatmaker measure from ear to ear, up & over the top. Note the various crown heights & dents in some of my hats.

Vintage Stetsons with 5-3/4 to 6" open crowns

I'm afraid with new OR's about all you can do is test fit examples at retail. One of the reasons for the popularity of the CD that rarely gets mentioned is for an OR clone they are still close to a 6" open crown.

The current OR Deluxe crown is 4 1/4".... Do they "break in" in that they sit lower on ones head; the crown giving a bit? Could I get professionally slightly reshaped to fit better? I guess it doesn't bother me too much... but it's not a fit as a 6 7/8 should IME.

When I push it down it fits/feels better. Better in that I could wear out side with a breeze....

Still torn on what to do... I REALLY like the sage color and have never seen a vintage that color or my size.

I got to a local Stetson dealer and tried a few 6 7/8 that were perfect fits! They even took the time to measure the inside and confirm each was a standard 6 7/8 circumference.... I'd have bought one but again no sage and could not promise better than 12 week delivery.... I'm in desert AZ area and probably wont wear much once past April....

Dang it I really like the hat!

Thanks!

When you said you could pull it down & get it to sit where you wanted but it would ride back up, that tells me the crown is too short for your head. That won't change or break in. And that is a separate issue from the size/circumfrence issues around the sweat. The only way to perhaps get a better fit is thru trial & error at a retail store. Even if you waited 12 wk delivery there is no guarantee it would fit any differently because it will not be a custom fit hat.

I think the Sage is a new 6X era color. There are guys here who have them. Perhaps they will chime in on how they fit them.

That would be too short & low for me too. If I'm looking at a 4X (never owned a 6X) I know from just a glance that if the brim is under 2-3/4" then it will not have the crown height I want. As the crown heights have come down more brims end up being cut at 2-5/8, so that's just a quick indicator on an OR.

The Distressed OR is part of the Royal De Luxe line and it is not the firmer 6X. It has a 2 3/4” brim and is 4 1/4” crown (approximate measurements per Stetson).

If the hat fits at the sweatband, and the crown doesn’t touch your head, I’m not sure why the hat moves up on you. I also like more crown, but if the crease isn’t making contact with my head, the reason I prefer it is for aesthetics and not for fit.

Just a thought: you can get a custom made hat in rabbit fur felt in Dark Moss for just a bit more than what a Stetson costs. That way you can specify the dimensions and get the hat you really want.

Well that's the thing... Crown touches top of my head and makes it sit too high. If I pull down to where it fits as I like it eventually rides up. I have long hair and I guess that kinda greases the skids but I've had many others and not expereinced this.

It is less firm so still wonder if it'll loosen up more in short order. Vintage ones seem to be much less stiff but that could be style and or age....

Custom another roll of the dice.... Perhaps I can learn more about conveying what I'm after by hanging out here.

Thanks!

Customs aren’t as intimidating as you might think. Tell a respected hatter that you want an OR with a 6” open crown and you’re off. Send a photo of your Stetson for the colors you want and then wait for your hat to arrive. You can specify all the minutiae or you can trust the hatter.

As a bonus, if you’re a 7 5/8 and you don’t like the hat I can probably think of someone who would buy your “mistake.” ;)

Question for vintage Stetson hat aficionados: let’s say a guy wants to sell me an old OR from the 50’s. It measures 22 1/8” circumference. My head measures right at 22 1/4”. Would you chance it? I mean, I have a hat jack, just not too sure about moving it 1/8 of an inch without warping the brim, tapering the crown, etc.

I realize I’m bringing up a dead thread but this seemed like the right place for this question.
