To address something Lefty said above -- I have always wondered what it was about the Stetson 100 that actually commanded double the price of a 7X Clear Beaver. I have a Stetson 100 -- it is a beautiful lid. But twice the price ? Hmmmmm....

One of TFL historians said 1961 in another thread was the first year for the 100.

Western Ranch Outfitters still offered a "100" in their 77-78 catalogue for $110.00...also a 7X for $65.00 for a "Rancher" style western. The Open Road was still at $100.00 for the 100 and $55.00 for a 7X and $30.00 for a 3X. The 1981 catalogue shows three Open Road qualities a 10X for $125.00, a 6X for $75.00 and a 4X for $45.00. The Rancher model was offered as a 10X for $135.00, 7X for $90.00 and a 4X for $60.00.

Yes, my bad. Must have been 51 with some discussion about a 48 or 49 model but nobody could find evidence of a 100 that early.

I have a 5X western with the 70s? size tag that reads 7-3/8 Long Oval (no 59cm designation listed yet).

It's got a fairly stiff brim but malleable crown. Not as big as a Rancher but a smidge larger than an OR, and no ribbon/brim binding.

Not sure where this 5X falls in the lineup...

I just purchase a Stetson Select Quality hat and my research brought me (not for the first time) to this thread. There is some confusion and the date of manufacture makes a big difference, but this thread deserves a bump.
