I seem to recall reading here that they had a 5 1/2 " open crown & 2 1/2" raw brim.
I owned one and that is what I remember.

You can still find some specs on Stetson's website, and the 2.5" raw brim is what they have listed. And I have also read elsewhere (can't remember the site) that yes, the open crown is 5.5". These are very hard to find, I searched quite a while for a size 7 caribou, but the only sites that still had the hat in stock were carrying the black and mink colors.

And if you know of a site that can still get custom Christy's hats, I would be interested. Top Secret Hats (formerly Hornet's) no longer sells them in custom specs.

:arated:

whats the ribbon size?

My Nostalgia has a 2-1/8" ribbon, but for some reason I'm thinking that the ribbon specs were changed mid-production?!

And just as an aside -- I don't believe that I have ever seen so much interest in tFL threads about a modern Stetson dress hat since its discontinuance?!

Christy's doesn't do custom orders as far as I know. The Swerford was made to avoid having to do custom orders.
Correct; I've contacted them several times trying to get any of the Christy's hats with custom specs and they've noted that they no longer accept customizations. While it is true that each hat is made to order, that means made when the order comes in and not with the specs requested. The Swerford was released with the specs that were common for Adventurer orders from Indy fans, but it was to avoid custom orders going forward.

Another option would be to get a Fed IV and have the brim trimmed to an even 2.5" and get a wider ribbon if you so desire. It'd be a better hat than the Christy's anyway.

Yup, this is the route I went; I got one in Moonstone, which is very close to the Stetson Caribou color... I saw a comparison of the two side-by-side and the Caribou Nostalgia looked dirty compared to the Moonstone Fed IV. I evened the brim to almost an exact 2.5" around but left the ribbon intact. I may someday get the hat reblocked to open crown and put on a wider ribbon (need to adjust the crown to a higher crease if going with a wider ribbon), but that is only if I can find black in 2", and I haven't found it yet.

Akubra does custom orders sometimes. Last I remember hearing on the board they weren't until the new year. I suspect The Hattery/Hats Direct would be happy to trim the brim for you however.

I had actually asked them this same question prior to purchasing my Moonstone Fed IV and they do not. They sell the hat as it comes direct from Akubra, and they couldn't take custom orders either.

However, here is a pic from this afternoon of me wearing the Moonstone Fed. As I mentioned before, I evened out the brim to 2.5" all around, though instead of trimming, which my wife was completely against, I took a more passive approach; I slowly sanded the brim down in the front and back with 100 grit paper, then smoothed it with 150 grit in a counter-clockwise direction. The entire process took about a week, since I only went at it for about 10 minutes in a stretch. Not sure if this is a good way to go about it, but it certainly got a nice, even look without the worry of damaging the hat overall.

BTW, the crease is a diamond, if that helps you envision the possibilities. Oh, and another option is to talk to Parker at Falcon Park Hattery. I have sent him a couple of pics of a vintage Knox 40 and he stated he could recreate it and the price was great. I may go that route, though I'm going to wait for my Penman Casablanca before making the decision since the style, with welted edge, is very near to that hat as well.

Really? I'm surprised they wouldn't trim it for you....I swear EggHead (or another member) got a Campdraft whose brim was trimmed to 2.5" and rebound, maybe that was through Everything Australian....

Yeah, from their responses "Custom brim cuts are not possible because Akubra is a large manufacturer" (from an email response I received on Oct 27) it appears that they may just be drop shipping; ordering from a warehouse to ship direct without the hat actually entering the shop.

Yes, it was through EA. I remember because it motivated me to send a note to Mr. Sam at EA to ask about a brim trim on a mid-brown CD. His reply, I believe, was that the factory said they wouldn't be doing any more custom orders, even brim trims, until the new year (the Akubra factory closes down during Christmas, which in Australia is hot weather).

I actualy found an original Nostalgia hat that Stetson made in the late 1980's. It was a size 7 5/8 in Caribou. It was in the back of my store without a label. I sold it with one hour after putting on the shelf . I didnt even know it was there.
