That hat looks to be from the 1930's by the style of the band . Nice hat . 15 bucks back then was a lot of money!:cool2:

Wish I could help with information on a 15, Nick, but about the best I can do is say, wow. What an awesome looking hat. Merry Christmas to you, indeed.

I'm wondering about Besdor's comments, though: Is your opinion on age based on the style of the ribbon? Does that style have a particular name? Was that ribbon style popular in one or more periods so that some other hat with the same style is likely to be from that particular period? Boy, I'm a wealth of ignorance this morning.

What a hat.

And another Phoenician! There are a lot more of us here than I'd realized. But then, there are times when my schedule keeps me away from the computer for months at a time - at least, in terms of message board browsing. Sometimes I just don't notice folks' locations, I guess.

here is a kindof crappy picture, just dusted it off and put it on, mode edge, and there is a little spot under the brima nd the sweat need minor attaching. Great height and a huge brim.

I'll get a better one during the week.

Nice hat! It looks very typically 40s for Stetson. It has the high crown wide brim and an expensive Mode edge---otherwise known as a Cavanagh Edge. I am not sure which picture has the more accurate color but I would guess the last one. Stetson had colors like that know as the "Canyon Mixtures" in 1940s. A red brown would be typical and so would other earthern shades.
Here is the ad so you can check it out:

This 1939 has an interesting shade of brown from their "International Colors" offerings but the bow is at the back of the hat and not like the one you have at the side.

Interesting nonetheless though.
I have a similar bown on my Knox Foxhound from the late 1940s. Sort of an interesting hat that took me quite a while to find.

It's hard to imagine that Stetson and Dobbs made some great hats years ago but they did . I think a big problem today is that the styles today have no flair . Everything looks the same . Years ago hats were made with different types of trims and edges .
I wish more people appricited a hat . :cool2:

They sure did. The styles had flair and the shapes were interesting not a bunch of cookie cutter fedoras. The most important style thing to me is the block. They managed to give the crown a nice rake from front to back and the dents at the front were deep with a nice roundness to them. The extra height at the front allowed the dents to be as such. Just take a look at the ads and Nick's hat. They speak for themselves. ;)

Regards to all,

J

This one is similar, it's a Stetson Royal Deluxe with an overwelt. It has the original price tag of $12.50 in it. These fedora's with the pleated bows are definitely more rare. I have a Borsalino with one too, but that's it.

Just a question...

Hi to all,
to Fedoralover and all the friends hat collectores:
I've always seen your wonderful vintage fedoras in gorgeous condition, very good shape and smooth, with the size tag on them; did you wear it, or you keep then in their boxes?

Regards.
Riccardo.

I recently discovered that my grandfather, who passed away when I was 1 year old, wore a Stetson fifteen. My dad currently has it, and sent me some great photos. From all of the loungers' expertise, I'm guessing that this falls somewhere in the 1940s, partially from the brim that appears to be on the wider side, and has the mode edge. It's not particularly high quality felt (3x), but still seems like a great hat in great condition to me! I can't even tell what color it is, but I think it's really pretty. Anyone else have input as to the manufacture date, etc.?

Bowlerman.

That's a beautiful hat and with the family connections it is very special indeed. It's curious to me that it has both 3X Beaver quality and Stetson Fifteen on it? Wear it with pride!

Gotta convince my dad to send me the hat first! Then it will be worn proudly, indeed! from this thread I'm gathering the fifteen refers to nothing more than the original cost?

The 3X is a step above the Royal Deluxe Stetson & the Fifteen is a model tied to the purchase price like the Twenty, Twenty Five, etc. I had a VERY nice 3X Open Road, good quality felt. Nice lid, wish I could've worn my grandfather's lids...
