Sport jacket that doubles as a coat?

It seems like that in alot of early 20th century photos, people are wearing very thick, wool jackets that look like they double as a sport jacket and coat. Is it just a different, weave, or am I guessing correctly?

You might post some of these photos so we know exactly to which you refer. I'm guessing standard styles using the heavier fabric of yesteryear but.......

I have a 1934 Belgian single breasted peak lapel suit jacket that has material much heavier than a modern overcoat, and comparable to a WWII peacoat in terms of material weight. Really beautiful material and cut. Good to about freezing.

Also, the "Old Town" jackets are pretty much what I'm describing.
