The "Shady Oak" is a western style like Lyndon Johnson wore. It's similar in appearence to the Stetson "Open Road".

Thanks Michaelson. I skipped that post after the pic of the oak tree and the highway.....the Lounge was full of new posts that week so I "sped read" them.

I think Truman wore a variety of hats, as I looked at the link posted here to his museum.

Like this straw:
Truman Hat

And this felt:

H.S. Truman Lee hat

I really don't know WHAT the thing was, Matt. I saw it when I was down there, and I believe it was some kind of a shape molding type machine, but other than that, I'm making a completely uneducated guess. I do remember it was ancient looking, and from what they told me, went back decades with the shop, and had been out of action for years. Regards. Michaelson

Well, that's good to hear that they fixed their equipment! It's always refreshing to hear that the 'old' hasn't been thrown out by the new. Just because something is old isn't a good reason to throw it out, as we all agree. I'm always fascinated that the vintage and older machinery are still being used. Whether it be an old car, radio, or in this case a hat making tool, it's just so nice and refreshing to know that quality will always surpass the cheap 'have it now and throw it way tomorrow' mentality.

I take my Mallory off to these hat makers for keeping it going and keeping the art of hat making alive!

Highest Regards,

Root.

PS. Sorry that I derailed the last thread. I thought it was in good taste, but I guess it wasn't. :D

I have had further word on the subject. Peters Bros. can make the Shady Oak model, but it's a special order. I was told it'd take about 3 weeks for delivery.

Glad to read some updated info, though I am personally disappointed with PB after reading this, as I have requested updated info on it's status on numerious occasions since Christmas, and was the individual who asked them about getting the Shady Oaks back into the offering. I have received nothing to date regarding those requests. Glad they're talking to somebody. Regards. Michaelson [huh]

p.s. Are you going to order one, if I may ask?

The Shady Oaks from PB? What a hat in american history! The LBJ I don't what to be TOO Western look and the hat give3n to American Presidents famously not worn by JFK. Why would it take so long to build that hat vs any other western or fedora, based on equipment? But it is an american classic hat for sure. Can they make this in pure beaver?

Yes, they can. They offer it in 6x, 10x, 20x, and pure beaver, from what Joe tells me. He's got the page all ready to post on his site, but just hasn't done it yet. It's one of those special order hats that has to be worked into the regular work, as they're trying to get caught up from the stock show orders they received over the past month or so. Regards. Michaelson

Well, depending on the buyer, what this hat has going for it is the provenance behind the hat, which Art or Steve can NOT provide. I guess it's all on what one is looking for in a hat....it's use, or it's use and the history behind it. I believe there is room for both collectors myself. Regards. Michaelson

I agree with you on provenance

As i said its a very nice hat!!, and as far as provenance behind the hat, which Art or Steve can NOT provide. I guess it's all on what one is looking for in a hat....it's use, or it's use and the history behind it. I believe there is room for both collectors myself.

I could not agree more!! :)
