So, I find a vintage hat I've been hunting for quite a while. It's in terrific shape, and comes with it's original box. We settle on the price, and the seller (not a forum member) assures me he will pack it up carefully.

The seller emails me with tracking numbers, and mentions that the postal clerk did him a *favor* by "adding lots and lots of extra tape to the box because it was old". He then goes on to explain that the hat box was just small enough there was no up-charge for its size (oh good...lol).

Yep, my near mint fedora is trecking across the country in a 70 year old box that is collectible in its own right. The best part... At least there will be "lots and lots of tape" holding the box together while it bounces around the back of a semi.

LMAO!!

At least they didn't try to stuff it into a COM10 envelope!

Unfortunately some people are "shipping challenged..." [huh]

I am optimistic that I can help the sellers of my ebay hat purchases deliver them carefully. I usually e-mail the seller of an auction that I win thanks for offering the item and thank them in advance for carefull packaging it before handing it off to the delivery agent. On occasion have even suggested packaging options and offered to pay extra if extra attention was needed in the delivery process. Almost all of my e-mails have been well received and acted on.

Of course, you have to have exceptions. Below is a bad pic, but a pic of the Whippet I purchased from Australia that arrived in a flat envelope. It had stamps, postmarks and tire tracks on the dirty envelope. Jeepers....

Tom, I hope the hat meets your expectations.

Best, Eric -
