How durable is the suede? It sounds like it doesn't have much longevity, but it looks like it could take a beating. Aero's Type III in the suede steer isn't cheap.

I've had (and have) many suede jackets--maybe a dozen. Right now I wear a suede original tan (cow) Californian that I used to baby but am now "just going for it" in. Here's my thoughts on the "look" after wear. First, all the super soft luxury thin suedes do have to be worn and treated with care...they don't look good when dirty, greasy, and generally shabby--and because they are cut to drape the linings are also luxury satins or silks and also can tear.

However, the tougher, thicker-skin, suedes--cow/steer, boar, and some goat--can look great worn down and broken in. Most get to a point, with heavy wear, where the suede has almost no surface to it, like nubuck, but even smoother with less nat. This after years of rain and general abuse as opposed to the ones you need to baby. Black and dark brown suedes always look as good beaten up as they might new--just a different look--because they don't show the grime like tan and and lighter ones. My heaviest worn ones are a thirty year old black suede bomber that has been kicked around by me and two teenagers, worn down to matte leather; and a dark brown suede (cow) car coat worn a lot and now going through the hairy phase before it gets to matte. (The leather gets soft and very broken in, drapes, but the suede rises, and gets hairy--just to the feel more than to the eye--before eventually rubbing down again). If anyone wants to see pics, let me know and I'll try to dig them out.

I know people have been interested in how this would wear, this is a near identical suede shown on a 60 year old jacket - as long as you care for your suede it can wear very well.

Personally I've got a real love for suede and have many jackets (and shoes and bags!) despite the fact I live in Glasgow where it rains constantly- I wear suede almost every day in one way or another :)
