"...those damned [formal starched] shirts were the forerunner of jeans as the uniform of the conformists."

Extract from the memoires of William Bede O'Malley circa 1920 (from High Road to China by Jon Cleary, written in 1977).

Kind regards,
Magnoli

“British people still wear clothes. By clothes I mean actual clothes: jackets and shirts and ties and suits. The spirit of Beau Brummell is still visible. English men make an effort. We’ve lost that in the US. Everyone is more concerned with being comfortable”

“Those with little money must count on brains, hard work, and style to get ahead. Good manners and a sense of humor help as well. This is the nature of both the Dandy and Democracy: that our destinies are not written before we are born. I understood this from a very early age, and was lucky enough to have a mother who allowed me to experiment with my vision of myself. My belief is that we all invent ourselves to one degree or another. I tried all sorts of clothes, and noticed how people reacted to them. I carefully noticed how costumes on actors helped them play their parts. And I was quickly aware that some men in our neighbourhood got more attention and respect because of their style. Style is neither superficial nor inconsequential.”

"I’m fairly careful about the tailoring," he says, "I usually take my suits back to the shop at least half a dozen times—too much shoulder or too loose or too tight. What I dislike is wearing a lot of material." He meditates for a moment. "I don’t see any reason to carry all that extra cloth about," he adds.

Fred Astaire, GQ interview, 1957

No friend of drape and wide trousers that Mr. Astaire... ;)
but his statments just fit with the current fashion of the late 50's anyway.
