Some New Old Hats

I went on a trip and was able to visit my grandmother's house on my way back. While I was there exploring her old house and old things, I found a couple of hats that used to belong to my grandfather.
The first is a homburg by La Salle hat company. There is a tag on the inside of the sweat that appears to be marked "3.95" I suppose as the price. It's in pretty good shape, except the ribbon needs a bit of work and there's some damage to the felt beneath the brim. Hopefully all repairable.
The second is a super-dark brown fedora by Dobbs Fifth Avenue. It's in perfect condition and is size 7 1/8, and I think the homburg is about the same size. There's a price tag with "14.95" and one beneath it with "13.95."

I have the box for the Dobbs as well, although it's pretty well beat up. Both hats were in the same box too

Anyway, I'd like to know about when you would date the hats. I'll try to post up some pics of the liners later, but I know they're both sewn in. One of the hats has a "Gilner's Store" logo on the band, in case you know anything about that store. Thanks

I was going to ask that question. Same with my dads hats. He wore a smaller size. I gave a Stetson of his, like new, to my daughter. She doesn't appreciate fedoras however. I hate to get rid of it. Maybe some day she'll wear it.

The Dobbs is a probable '60s hat, maybe an outside chance it's late-'50s.

I was kind of thinking the same thing because of the price and style. I'll post some pics of the liner which may hopefully help narrow it down some.

Is it? That kind of makes sense by how it's sewn in like that, but I can't recall seeing one like that before. [huh] Interesting

Yes, that frayed back edge on the bow is an intentional style.

Nice find, JP. Since they belonged to you Grandfather they'll be great keepsakes for you. A trip to Optimo might be worth looking into as a way to have them resized to fit you. I bet your Grandfather would get a kick out of knowing you're wearing his hats. Of course, Optimo would want to replace the sweats, but they will return the originals to you.

Congrats on rescuing these great hats. The Dobbs looks like it's straight out of Mad Men. Was your Grandfather in the Advertising biz?

The homburg has a very stingy brim, compared to other homburgs I have seen. Could it be a 60s version of the classic homburg?

Also, if you're a 7 1/4, have you considered stretching one of the hats, or having them professionally restored?

unfortunately, I'm around a size 7 1/2, so I don't how well stretching or resizing would work. Those brims are awefully stingy and I think resizing the hats would make them too stingy! I'm still trying to think of what to do with them[huh]

I have 2 hats from my grandfather, 1 is trashed & other is in mid-restore, & 1 hat from my dad. I can't wear them nor stand to let them go. After the restore, I'll probably have both hats on hooks on the hall tree that also includes some of their walking canes.

I like the idea of hooks- maybe I'll clean them up and display them on hooks. I wish I had a picture of my granddad in them to display as well.
