Some Art Deco china

I'm in the middle of decorating the front room, so all the china has been removed and dusted down. Before I put it all back up I've taken a few photos so I can share the small collection:

1 - A Susie Cooper teapot, tea cup, saucer and side plate in pink Dresden Spray:

2 - Part of a Susie Cooper tea set in the multi-coloured 7670 pattern from 1928. In addition to the pieces shown here I've got another 5 cups and saucers, 5 side plates and a large serving plate:

3 - A couple of Clarice Cliff saucers and a tea cup, saucer and side plate by Gibsons:

4 - Some Shelley in their Regent shape: cup, saucer and side plate in yellow, black and grey, pattern number W 12288; cup, saucer and coffee pot in green, black and grey, pattern number W 12465:

5 - Part of a Shelley Regent coffee set in red and grey, pattern number W 12132/W - I used to have a sugar bowl but that was broken some years ago:

6 - My favourite, a Shelley Vogue shape trio in coral, black and silver, pattern number 11786 from the early 1930's:

I can see them. Just beautiful. I have 5 Clarice Cliff plates my wife bought several years ago. (there originally 6 but someone got careless . . .). They're later ("Harvest" 1939) and less jazzy than those, but still elegant. Once I started Googling Clarice Cliff, I found a number of other contemporary designers. This is one area I wish the Lounge concentrated on more. There are some stunning ceramics out there, but not cheap and not easy to find.
Clarice Cliff is all the rage in Hollywood these days.

Ooooo, yum, yum, decochina. I love the pieces, especially the Shelley ware. I would love, Love, LOVE a Shelley teaset in a geometric pattern.

I am the proud owner of a Clarice Cliff wall plate that was my Great Grandmothers. It hung on my Nana's kitchen wall when I was a child so it holds fond memories. Unfortunately it is packed up on the other side of the world in my mother's attic! I will have to take a photo when I go back early next year so I can look at it now and again.

We have a late 30s dinner service by Royal Doulton in the green Athlone patten. Last used for Sunday lunch. It is complete and perfect, and a joy to use.

I was inspired to grab the camera and post some pics! (I'm rubbish with technology...)

First up, the Royal Doulton from about 1938/39. It came in green, blue and brown colourways. It is a standard, ordinary shape with a semi-deco pattern of abstract leaves. The only real deco influence is the vegetable dish handles and lid top.

Also in the cupboard, a 1930s teaset I bought very cheap at a boot sale. It is only marked Foreign - most likely Czech. Just cups, saucers, plates and a cakeplate.

Lastly, a 1920s coffee set. I love the baubles on it. They remind me of chinese lanterns.

All beautiful stuff. Funny how new china is being made with similar patterns. Good taste is, indeed, timeless.

I have several part tea sets and dinner services-I have been told 'no more' hm..what he doesn't see....

Love the Shelley, very smart. I have some nice cheap Paragon sets, and I love Meakin!!!!

I go for stuff I can use and apart from the Woods Ware in Beryl, (love it) I use a Meakin set called 'Glamour'

I have been saying that I am actually going to bring our china down and use it. After our wedding, I put my collection in an antique china cabinet. There it has sat forever. I have been asking myself, Why keep such nice (and expensive) pieces up for looks? I need to quit saying it and do it: Bring them out and have a tea social, a card party, or something. I might even just pour me a cup over a good book.

All these pieces are beautiful. Classical beauty, no doubt

Cricket, we don't use ours for everyday - I wouldn't want to risk breaking it with everyday use - but we do use it whenever we have people over for dinner, tea etc. People really appreciate you using 'good' china on them!

It is lovely to use and enjoy. The things above are all I have here in England but I have many things packed away at my mother's that belonged to my Nana, her mother and Grandmother. I do hope that one day I'll get to use them too.

One of my favourites is a 30s teaset that belonged to my Great Grandmother that my Nana put aside for me when I was born and gave to me on my 18th birthday. That year I had a tea party for my friends so I could use it.

I love it all!
I myself have a fair bit in Crown Ducals ‘Orange Tree’ which was a surprise present from my ma and pa- I adore it and will only ever come out on a very, very special occasion – well it’s nice to know you have something extra special just in case!
I also have a fair amount of odd pieces of other makes too.

My favourite every day ceramics is Woods Ware (in beryl- or the green one!I always have my cuppa in the cup and saucer.) I’ve been wanting a set or ages and finally started building my collection up a few months ago, just looking out for plates and bowls now!
I also love and use pieces of Midwinter’s style craft (in various patterns) but that’s the wrong era.

Like the Shelley items very much -- beautiful.

And it's nice if one uses the china! Though I'm not sure -- is there a way to know if older porcelain has any lead-based-glaze risks? I have a friend who was importing modern porcelain from Poland, and he had to fill out all kinds of paperwork with respect to that issue, since today it's so much more regulated.

Consider South Miami Beach, the Mecca for Deco.

We went there once before in October 1991, the year before our daughter was born and just before the area really started to be cleaned up and redeveloped, and before it became fashionable. It wasn't busy, our hotel had a pool and free parking, and the room cost something like $30 a night for an air-conditioned double room with en suite bathroom, the beach was never crowded, the restaurants always had an empty table - overall it was a calm, relaxing, inexpensive and stylish place to have a holiday. I don't know what it's like today but a few years ago it looked like it had been taken over by raucous, drunken slobs who cared nothing for the architecture and just wanted to be seen at the hot new holiday destination. The hotel we stayed at has had a makeover and now charges up to $339 per night for a double room. If it has started to become unfashionable again then it may be time to return
