So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

You're mixing your metaphors. Right-wing survivalists would just as soon be left alone to do their thing whereas the "back-to-the-land hippie types" would inflict their self righteousness on everybody. That's hardly an attitudinal kinship. It's quite polarized in fact.

I beg to differ. I’ve been acquainted with both types and find they have more than a little in common.

There is no “in fact” in your criticism. It’s merely your anecdotal observation, as is mine. “Inflicting self-righteousness” indeed.

Oh, and you might wish to brush up on just what a mixed metaphor is.

Ah... sure.

Anyone who's ever been married to any kind of rightie survivalist type can testify quite convincingly as to how controlling -- often violently so -- such personalities tend to be. And a spin around the shortwave radio dial will demonstrate their lack of reluctance in evangelizing their beliefs.

It's interesting that this controlling attitude is also very common among the alterna-health/ultra-crunchy cultists, which takes us back to the original point. It doesn't take much searching to find message boards full of desperate kids trying to escape from the grasp of both types of parents. In both cases, you end up with an exaggerated and fanatical anti-authoritarianism that manages to become even more authoritarian than what it's supposedly against. In both the cases the "politics" are simply an excuse for exercising that control.

We recently bought, at considerable expense, a new central A/C condenser (the boxy unit on a pad on the outside of the house). The one it replaced was new less than a year before we bought this place (autumn of 2015) and would have been under warranty had the previous owners registered the thing.

I registered the new unit the day it was installed.

Just looked into whether the almond extract in what remains of the whipped cream in the bottom of the bowl poses a hazard to our dogs and cat.

Much contradictory “information,” some of which has to be inaccurate.

The information superhighway is full of potholes. Proceed with caution.

A healthy population of ’em?

I had stored dry pet food in the garage, until it became mouse food. Now I keep it in the house, where the cat patrols. No evidence of mice since.

They had nested inside bags and a bin over winter, bin had a hole in a corner. Got rid of all bags, bins inspected.

Issue is they chewed some wiring on Hallowe'en lights, wrecked, and stored corn inside my lawnmower and pressure washer. Have baited the shed, but need to get bait traps as well.

Once a crafty mouse inside my house basement could slip cheese or salami off a bait trap.
Quite a formidable opponent. So I altered the traps by hair triggering them, then masking taped down
all traps so as to prevent any movement. A basic lethal Viet Cong X ambush mouse trap. :D

My wife has recently been showing me a lot of videos of what Olympic sports would look like if average people were competing. Humbling, to say the least. But, I think, a good idea is to have a video of “average Joe/Jane” in every event… just to give us all some perspective.

Unruly children and the parents who ignore their obnoxious behavior.
:D

I’ll never forget gazing out the window of a coffee shop in downtown Tacoma one lovely spring day several years ago and witnessing two kids — 7 and 8 or so — running into a city planting strip and ripping up by the dozens the in-bloom daffodils planted there. Two “adults” — the little miscreants’ parents, presumably — did and said nothing to stop them.

Can’t say I’m a big believer in corporal “correction,” but those parents were in need of correction of one sort or another. Did they think letting their kids behave in such an antisocial manner was doing them any favors?

As I watched Katie Ledecky smoke the field in the 1500m the other night, I thought about what an exhausting race that has to be. I was on the swim team in high school, but never swam anything of that distance. I’d imagine most of those out there would struggle to make one length, let alone 15 full laps.

I was also reminded of something funny. If you didn’t know, in the distance races there is someone at the end of the pool lowering a little white sign that tell the swimmer what lap they are on. We had white boards, and you could write whatever you wanted on them. I won’t repeat some of the stuff we used to write on the boards for some poor schlub to read on lap 20 or so.

Get a barn cat. Problem solved.

My relatives the dairymen always host a population of semi-feral cats. My wife, who had next to zero experience of an actual working farm, spotted such a cat on a visit there and asked my uncle the cat’s name. He smiled and said, “That’s a barn cat.”

There’s a sadder story from that visit involving a kitten. But that’s a story for another time.

Referring to a master bedroom/ suite as a "primary bedroom/ suite." I normally have little toleration for those who have enjoyed white privilege (And I have. I'll admit it.) whining about Political Correctness ( which, more often than not, is nothing more than courtesy or common decency) but this crosses the silliness line. A man or woman is master or mistress of his/ her domicile if their name is on the title or lease contract. And that's that.
