Since I live on this side of the pond, I have only seen the difference between the two companies when I've visited the US. Target is palatial compered to Walmart, what's not to like?
It may be different in other States, but I did notice that in Walmart you can select either a carry basket or one of the massive shopping carts, there's nothing in between. Has that changed?

I had a girl friend tease me a couple of weeks ago:
Me: Forget the wine, give me a bottle of gin.
Her (teasing tone): Really? When's the last time you had gin? I bet you haven't had gin in months.
Me: Tuesday. I had a martini on Tuesday.
Her: Ummm...

We've been out of gin a month now, I think. (We live in a small college town and liquor is hideously expensive, we drive to the nearest city to get it.) Husband went to the doctor on Monday. His cholesterol is up, and he's lowered it before with an evening glass of red wine.

So husband swings by the local liquor store on the way home. I see the bags and I paw through them, but no gin. Not even a bottle of vermouth.

So right now my only vice is loose leaf tea. Darn it. (We spend enough on it to make it a low level vice.)

I especially find it irksome that there's this popular "mommy-culture" belief that if you have childcare for a bit, your ideal escape is a Starbucks Latte while you push your cart around Target shopping.
It annoys me too because if there's nothing they need to buy they're teaching their kids materialism. There

I work in a retail store and we get those moms. I understand some moms might need some stuff they're buying, but I'm not talking about them. I'm referring to the ones who are in there out of boredom, who are in there spending money they don't need to spend, taking up space with their huge strollers, and teaching their children materialism. They're interrupting me mid-task unnecessarily.

I was raised by a big-shot wannabe who found shiny baubles hard to resist.

I attribute this particular personality trait to the scarcity of his early years -- both material and emotional.

Some of that rubbed off on me, I must acknowledge. Where we differ is that I never pay retail if I can avoid it, and that I can see past the shiny new paint.

At this moment I'm in my kitchen. On the counter, among other things, is an Oster "beehive" blender and a KitchenAid stand mixer and a '60s or maybe early '70s vintage toaster and a National rice cooker, all purchased used at thrift stores, and all in perfect operating condition. (And a Breville espresso machine, bought new almost a decade ago for more money than I care to disclose. But that was a birthday present for the lovely missus, for whom I make exceptions to my parsimonious ways. And I figure the purchase has been amortized by now.)
