I have to wear it especially now that the sun is coming out more.

Last fall I went to a Dermatologist and he gave me an rx for Triluma cream.
I get Melasma VERY easily mainly from the sun now that my pregnant / hormonal days are behind me ;)

But I do wonder how women kep't such nice pale complextions back in the day ? I can only think of cover-ups or parasols [huh]

OMG Yes

You bet!

I've had three basal cells removed from my scalp, and yesterday I had a squamous cell removed from my right cheek. And, I'm only 41. I must take care of myself or in ten more years, they'll have to remove ALL my skin!

Thanks for the links Cherry :) even though they didn't quite answer some of my questions, but alas! I am determined from this year on to use a parasol, umbrella or floppy sun had (all vintage of course) to keep the sun from causing damage.

I picked up another tub of Triluma today as I had a refill and it cost $246  the pharmacist was in awe that I would pay that much.
unlike my hair, my face is pretty much the only thing I am capable of working with.

I do wear sunscreen every day, even if the only time I will see the sun is during my drive to work. I also keep my arms and legs covered at all times, and usually wear a broad brimmed hat if I will actually spend time outdoors. I even go so far as to apply sunscreen to myself under any thin clothing items that the sun might penetrate. I am probably just crazy though. lol

As far as ladies in the past, I have a few theories. First, especially in the later vintage years, women did wear reasonably thick foundation, and from what I can tell by looking at my old compacts, the powder they used was a pretty thick-coverage pale pink color. That alone would have disguised a lot. And of course movie stars very likely had paler skin than a less wealthy woman who would have had to work outdoors. Also, it seems as though women were much better abut wearing sunhats than we are today. A good sunhat blocks a huge majority of UV rays.

Not everyone was pale "back in the day" though certainly there were long periods where having a tan was seen as common, a sign of a woman who had to work, and work outdoors at that!

Most of the pictures we see are either black and white or movie shots, both of which give us an unreal idea of peoples skin colour.

Of course tanning wasn't the fashion statement then that it is now, what we see as pale is "normal" its the fake tan and spending hours on a sunbed thats abnormal.

I do use a factor 50 sunscreen everyday (La Roche Posay), mainly because I'm concerned about ageing. In fact I'm starting to wonder if a bit of a tan might do me good  give my skin a bit of life...

In fact I've seen a few 1940's beauty articles that recommend using a powder darker than your skin tone for just that reason.

Religiously!

I have rosacea and have to be very careful about sun exposure. The thing that is easiest for me is to wear a moisturizer with sunscreen all year long and some extra sunscreen when I know I will be out in the sun. That, plus hats and not doing the tanning things like when I was younger took me back to my natural skin colour - think Dita. I was amazed to realize how fair I really was, since I spent years with at least some sun colour on my face. I'm not obsessive about keeping it pale, but being careful with sunscreen goes a long way to keeping it fair.

Yes, I wear sunscreen. My northern European complexion isn't suited to the land of eternal sunshine. I also take vitamin D3 in gel tab form, since humans aren't suited to being in the shade all the time, either.

Absolutement!

I'm Paley Mc Pale the Lord Mayor of Translucent Town!! I slap on the SPF 50 if theres even a glimmer of sun and wear foundation with built in SPF, can't take any risks with my pasty Irish skin.

I was reading about different paley products on beaut.ie which is an irish beauty blog, and they have some great recommendations about SPF products and about pale skin. They recommend MAC products, bit out of budget at the moment, but they look good, in particular the anti-fake tan face and body make-up!! I could do with getting rid of the blue vein look!!

I wear lots of it, year round actually. I am half Cuban and a a result out whole family is very fair but we all tan really well. I mean I get quite brown. But I love being pale it makes my day. Neutrogena makes an SPF 100 that is what i wear daily.

Some Canadian-made hats with UPF 50 protection:

I have one, and it's good quality. It's a year old, I've washed it a few times, and it looks as it did the day I bought it.

According to the site, the hats are the vintage of the future:

We are delighted every time we hear a Tilley Hat collection has been passed on to another generation of Tilley Hat wearers! Tilley Hats are guaranteed for life not to wear out (as Alex says “Yours, mine or its”). If your Tilley ever wears out (grows holes or frays through wear and tear) then we’ll replace it for free.

I wear sunscreen every day of my life, I'm half Irish and half Scottish so I burn quite easily. I also wear wide brimmed hats in the summer, but I'm looking at carrying a parasol this summer, I dunno though, I worry about looking too weird walking around. I guess though my skin is worth it, skin cancer is prominent in my family.

I'm mostly Irish ancestry and my husband calls me Casper. I am WHITE!

I wear sunscreen on my face every day of my life and try to stay out of the sun. I get freckles on my nose and arms and chest otherwise. Not that I'm against freckles, just like to be pale! lol

I wear it every day! I started while I lived up north, but moving to Florida has given me extra incentive to protect my skin. I just tried a new sunscreen this weekend that I am now IN LOVE WITH! It's Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunblock, it's designed to layer under other moisturizers and make up, and it works! Once it soaks in, my skin doesn't feel like I have anything on at all. I picked it up at Target for a whopping $12. Totally worth it.

I tried my best folks... I'm half Greek, and tan easily for a pale girl. I was determined not to get a driver's tan this year (oh that sexy, one armed farmer's tan!)

This weekend of beautiful sunshine I put on the newly purchased spf 55... and now am rocking a rash clear across the decollete. Does anyone else have a lot of trouble finding sunscreens (particularly higher SPF ones) that they don't react to when they might with another?

I use a physical sunscreen after all the stuff I read about free radicals, chemical sunblocks and the like.

I have to let it dry thoroughly or my foundation sits on top of it. I honestly feel that sunscreen is the top anti-aging weapon we have. I can't believe I used to tan! :eusa_doh:

I also hope to evade the sun's rays with my new parasol.

My very favorite sunscreen (I want you all to try it so it never never is discontinued): Fancl. A physical 30++ sunblock that is cosmetically elegant, my skin looks better with it on (like a primer), it doesn't smell like anything, and it contains no preservatives. The best thing; it really truly works. I've been in the high desert with a 50 spf on my body and this on my face, and my body got a bit of pink -- my face stayed pale. I wear sunscreen everyday because my sister did some tanning in her late 20's while I stayed out of the sun, she is a bit younger than me and everyone now mistakes her for my older sister.

I'm noticing more spots on my skin as I get older so I use sunblock. I use a store brand sunblock 30 'cause I burn easily! I do alot of bicycling from now, spring until I can't stand the cold anymore so I always sunblock before a ride. We do long distance rides so I may be out in the sun for up to 6 hours straight. I still get a nice golden brown before the summers up, but I don't get sunburn!
When I don't ride, I work as an apartment inspector. Some of these apartments are as big as small towns so I'm always outside. I smear sunblock under my uniform sleeves and shorts. I keep a bottle of sunblock in my city vehicle as well as a can of spray-on bug spray just in case.

I always would forget to wear sunscreen so then I got smart and got SPF in all my face creams and body lotions. Better something than nothing right?

I also do this because I am fair and really hate being burned... you know when you feel nauseus and you have the chills...? UGH worst feeling ever!

I always do in the summer but I need to get better at wearing it most other times, even if it's Spring or not sweltering and I don't plan on being outside for a long period of time.
