Hey everyone,
long time no post. I went to NY in Hell's Kitchen and found a hat store which i LOVED. I know that it wasn't the best, but i bought a wool felt gray fedora with a black band and wore it just about everywhere and it stood up okay. It was from Arnold's (ahat.com). Then when it was time to go we went to the airport and someone moved the hat from where i had put it up onto a ledge by a window....which i saw they did and remembered. But since i was one of the 1st to board our plane i forgot it on the ledge! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Anyways, it didn't show up in lost and foud so i've been looking for another hat ever since. I found this one on ebay and loved the look but the seller only has 7/8 on there for size and doesn't seem to know much. Can anyone tell me if it's a 6 7/8, 7 7/8....what? And also can someone say if the hat is good quality or not. go to http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-STETSON...ryZ14065QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks and go gators!!

Do a quick Internet search for this phrase" how to size a hat". You'll get numerous hits, all of which will tell you how to measure a hat. Here's the Miller Hats chart.

Email the seller and ask them to measure the circumference around the inside of the sweatband - but realize the answer you get will probably be plus or minus at least 1/4". It's hard to measure accurately.

As for the hat you've asked about, the Sovereign is a nice hat. It's often a bit smaller than the large fedoras of the 40's, but the one I had was super quality felt. You might ask them to measure the brim width and the crown height so you know what's up.

ALSO - Stetson often inserted size tags into commonly sized hats like this with no prefix, just the size suffix. This hat is almost certainly a size 6 7/8. If it had a 1/8, that would make a 7 1/8, 1/4 = 7 1/4. If I'm right, the interior circumference will be about 21 3/4".

I LOVE THAT HAT BUT IT WOULDN'T FIT. I would need atleast a 7 1/4. If anyone comes by a size like that in that fashon of hat please drop a message.

thanks,

measuring your head size is probably the easiest of the standard body measurements. But measuring the size of a hat is probably the hardest of the standard clothing measurements.

I take it for granted that the majority of hand measured sizes on ebay are grossly inaccurate. As pilgrim says,at least a 1/4" out either way, and in hat terms that is A LOT! In fact it is a major disaster.

I myself have a pro measuring device and i make a point of mentioning this on my ebay listings! Without one there is no sure fire accurate way of doing it, but the following will give greater accuracy than fumbling round the inside with a tape measure.

Turn the sweatband inside out and then measure round the outside. This is much easier than fumbling around inside the band.

Place an old belt or leather strap round the inside of the band - it will stay put more easily than a cloth tape - mark the circumference and then measure the belt/strap laid out on a nice flat table.

Ay one else got any suggestions?
