Showcase of Non-Indy Federations

...I also have a Dark Brown Fed IV, but it has a simple Center Dent crease that's a little too "Indyesque" for this thread. One of these days I'll probably re-crease it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
A couple of months after I made that post I finally gave my Dark Brown Fed IV a Diamond crease. I liked it so much that I re-creased my other two Feds as well:

With regards to the Fed IV being a "big" hat, compared to most fedoras from the 1940s and 50s I'd say it's dimensions and proportions are average. It might have a slightly taller crown, but that simply allows the wearer to crease it as high or low as he/she likes.

Resurrecting an old thread as I posted originally in the wrong place (ask a question but couldn't work out how to move it). About to order as my first Akubra a carbon grey Fed IV. Despite reading up through the various threads and having decided to go for the Fed IV, vaguely unsure given all the comments on the proportions / big size, but figure I may as well order to find out! Quite keen on not having the Indy bash, hence this fortuitous and topical thread, albeit 8 years ago; Wish me luck...
The Carbon Gray Fed was the first hat I ordered when I came back to hat wearing about 7 years ago. I'd been reading here and decided like you to take a chance on a hat from the other side of the world. It worked out great (though the hat looks a little lighter in color in these pics):

I chose the dark gray because I liked the similar hat that William Hurt wears in the early '90s SF film Until the End of the World.

That's a great picture. I've been thinking about a diamond or C-crown (is that the same as a teardrop?), but for sure, the diamond looks very interesting. Is their a "how to" thread somewhere here or shall I just search on you tube?

By "Big", I was thinking of the combination of high crown and large(r) brim. I have a contemporary high crown (4.5 inch crown with central bash - sorry if my terminology is off) fedora but with about a 2 inches brim so I guess the Fed IV seems bigger.

On a random parallel, I was on a flight this morning and there were two orthodox gentlemen wearing their black hats. This was handy for 2 reasons:

1) I realised that nowadays, the only way to travel by air with a hat is wearing it on your head or it will be crushed. To put it another way, I can travel with a hat! As we got delayed, I could really study their hats up close; and
2) whilst one of the guys had the "classic" model I usually see (round high porkpie with edge of massive brim curled up), the other younger guy had a fedora bash but maintained the massive brim. It looked like he had done it himself and which I thought was cool and reassured me not to be "afraid" of big brims!

Uh, sorry, my return flight is now delayed so passing the time in Bruxelles airport...

There is a difference between a C-Crown and Teardrop, but it's subtle and usually only noticeable when the hat is viewed from the top. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here are two that should help to show the difference...

There are probably a number of threads here that explain how to achieve a particular crease, but the Monster Bash Videos ... show us how you bash!! thread is a good place to start.

The Fed IV has a dimensional brim--2-1/2" wide on the sides, 2-3/4" front and back. If you're used to wearing hats with a 2" brim that extra width can be a little daunting...at first, anyway. But once you get used to seeing yourself in a hat with a wider brim you'll stop paying attention to it, and eventually wonder why you ever thought a 2-1/2" brim was "wide".

Okay to resurrect a thread? Gave my moonstone fed 4 deluxe a Bogie style diamond bash and a slight brim trim and I think it came out okay!
