What so ever, I found the idea silly enough to start a thread. So now, gentlemen, post yours!
When I was a little kid in the early 50's making that kind of hat for any number of reasons was extremely common. Haven't seen one done in decades now. They were especially associated, as you say, with the old bicorn hats worn by naval commodores back in the 19th century. They're lots of fun to make and wear. Another reason to lament the passing of the age of newspapers!
