The lace on the pink one is SO torn - I think from catching on the beading. Would I need to find a milliner to fix these??

I have mended small holes in veiling with a needle and thread, but to be very honest, the veiling on that pink one looks pretty trashed. I think it might be beyond repair. With the amount of mending you would have to do, I think it would show, a lot. You could always replace the veiling. When I remove torn or soiled veiling, I use fine scissors (like embroidery or manicure scissors) and clip it as close to the hat as I can.

I think the green one could be late 30s. I am pretty sure that's when elastic straps started, but I am not positive.
The little brown hat with the strap goes behind your head, not under the chin. I see a lot of sellers calling them "chin straps" but that wasn't really popular except for a very brief time in the late 30s, and they were for a specific kind of hat- almost military looking. There may be more instances, but those are the only ones I've run across. Generally when they're ruched ribbon like that they're behind the head ones

Thanks for the info! I'll have to try it on again with the strap in back lol It just seemed to fit under my chin, but it has probably stretched out over the years. I thought it might be for wearing in the car with the top down! Ah, dreaming of a 30s convertible Phaeton...

I read recently that the elastic band started in the 40s- anyone know?

I have an NRA labelled panama hat that came with an elastic hairband on it, so that's 1935 at the latest. It was really stretched so I took it off and just use a hatpin since that's also alot more 'British'. For some reason they weren't popular in the 30s here and then they weren't allowed on War-time hats due to restrictions.

My hats

I really really love hats. I actively wear mine and when I'm in Seattle, I attend events specifically around the 20's-40's era. I'd like to share my hats with you, so pictures follow

Left to right on top, Brown 1930's Mink hat, Dark Brown 1940's Faux Fur, White Faux Fur, date unknown, Black and White Art Deco Cap, date unknown, Dark Brown velvet 1940's, Small feather band and Pheasant Hat by Sharon, not sure on age.

I'm so jealous of everyone's hats, and that you can buy them online! When I find hats in person at antique shops I make a point to try them all on and I don't think I've found a type yet that looks good on me, with or without me having short hair.

As to keeping them on, it depends on the style and how well they fit.
Tilts come with bands that go around your head. Some hats come with hat pins or combs.
Personally, for most hats, especially close fitting ones, I don't worry about them too much. If they fit me, they will stay put unless there is a really dramatic gust of wind. It's the ones that are a little too small that I tend to use pins on.
If you feel like they might fall or fly off you can use hat pins (I tend to use corsage pins) or sew combs into the underside (I think I have a diagram of that somewhere. I'll check.).
But just looking at your photos I would say that the pink one with the beading shouldn't need help staying on, and neither should the lace one or the brown cap. You could easily use a hat pin in the back of the brown one if you felt the need though. The yellow pillbox might do well to have a comb sewn on the inside. I'm not sure about the fur one. I would guess it would stay put, but I'm not sure.
