There are many ways to date ties. I don't know what era particularly piques your interest, so i can't say specific qualities here. However, hand-painted art deco ties from the 40s and late 50s are very sought after. For good reason, they're beautiful. Mute patterns don't attract much attention these days.Is there a rule-of-thumb or something that calls out 'vintage' when I'm pawing through a rack of 100+ ties at Goodwill or a resale store? Beyond appeal, how can you spot vintage? I assume all vintage is not equal - is there a value factor that differentiates between old department store and collectable? Maybe that's what I'm asking... what constitutes a 'collectable' vintage tie?
I may make through 50 more pages tonight before I get attracted to another forum.

Here's an article that briefly describes ties from the 20s to the 70s. Here you'll observe the qualities that differentiate some eras.
John Lofgren Monkey Boots Shinki Horsebuttt - $1,136 The classic monkey boot silhouette in an incredibly rich Shinki russet horse leather.
Grant Stone Diesel Boot Dark Olive Chromexcel - $395 Goodyear welted, Horween Chromexcel, classic good looks.
Schott 568 Vandals Jacket - $1,250 The classic Perfecto motorcycle jacket, in a very special limited-edition Schott double rider style. They have some local to Oregon stores on the tags.Nice ones!
Early/mid 50s I would guess.
Could you show the back?
