Steve: You just found one of the nicest specs I've seen. Edwin Clapp specs...they belong in a museum--but, if they were mine, they'd be on my feet! Congrats!!

Thanks, Doug. They'll be on my feet as soon as a suitable occasion presents itself . . . or maybe sooner!

Incidentally, I have two questions for the knowledgeable shoe guys reading this:

1. How old do you suppose these are?
2. What does "State St," which is written on the inside of the foot bed, mean?

I got these old Edwin Clapps (my first pair) recently on ebay. I had to apply some elbow grease and some new laces, but they cleaned up nicely and fit well.

Seriously top score and great reno to boot...look like they have walked outside and had a few turns around the dancefloor.

I'm guessing that it's the model name; a nod to one of America's iconic streets, like Allen Edmonds' Madison Ave model.

Where did you get the fancy Allen Edmonds shoe trees? I've seen them on the shoes in their store but they only sell the trees they have on the website it seems.

Thanks,
Michael

These are TOP longwings! Modern Aldens, AE & the like are made to just a fraction of the standard the closed channel Clapps were.

they are 1950's most likely (maybe 60's) & State St. is the Model I believe.

Thanks for the compliments and congratulations, cookie, Issh, and AC!

I'm just not sure, actually, because I've had them for some time. I either bought them in an Allen Edmonds store or got them with a Prestige Recrafting at some point. I have other styles of AE trees, but these are the nicest.

AE owned Woodlore have the same trees on their site but they're branded Woodlore rather that AE. Maybe they would use the AE badge if you asked.

Love those shoes! I've been wanting a pair like these for years!

They are extremely hard to find in good condition, but they're out there... I saw an original two tone pair of loafers sell in the summer for about $250, so if you see original 50s two tones in a loafer or lace up cheap, buy em!

Loving those John Lobbs. They still have every single customers lasts stashed away. Big money for their shoes today!

I was interested - whilst watching a recent Series 2 Boardwalk Empire episode - to see this spiv federal attorney Chip (nickname for the misnamed Charles Thorogood) who was supposed to be "helping" Nucky with his court case for electoral fraud was chewed out by the judge for wearing green shoes. Our good ole attorney friend Chip is in court with some amazing shoes, seeking a transfer of Nucky’s case to Federal Court. The judge cuts him off to comment on the shoes. The judge is a trip. Chip is a goofball. The states’ attorney is annoyed. The judge agrees with Chip, however; and Nucky’s lawyer in the gallery is clearly pleased.

Looks like you can still get a pair in apple calf!
