It seems to be fairly common around here, different suburbs will have city wide garage sales and sidewalk sales, local businesses will have maps of all the sales in the area. It's great, you just drive around until you are ready to drop

Oohh, I wish we did that over here! Most of our suburbs arn't that big, but I bet it'd be popular. When I moved to this house 10 years ago I did a 'yard sale', still pretty unusual over here and was amazed how busy I was. I do live on a busy road though. The neighbours looked a bit horrified, it's not quite the 'done thing' in my area!

Woohoo! Don't you just love it when that happens? My question is what is she? (besides adorable).

Shes a string holder. You'd tend to put them in your kitchen if you were wrapping meat or something else that needed to be tied or contained. Or on your sewing area as well.

I was lucky finding some magazines at my local thrift shop. The "Weltbild" are not ladies' magazines, but sort of general culture, lifestyle, science mags.

The crafts magazines have mostly knitting patterns, but also some crocheting and sewing patterns.


At the same store, I found a new purse. Looks black in the picture but is very dark brown. I love the shape and the fact that it has a little extra department on the outside and an attachable long strap (so useful!).
The other case in the pic is for my camera equipment, fits quite nicely to the old Leica.


Some nice turn-of-the-century books, not in the best condition but seem like made for my wannabe Art Nouveau bedroom.

Congratulations on the knitting magazines. I have/had (sold the one on the far right) 3 of the Beyers and really like them. Esp. the boleros and cardigans shown.

Thanks! It was very unusual that they had those at the thrift store. 3 of them were doubles, I got them anyway, to sell or to trade - so if you're interested... But, since you say you already have 3 of them (or did you mean 3 other Beyers?), it's unlikely that I got any that you don't have.

I have the Beyers shown except the one with the woman in the blue vest on the cover. I have others as well but most are pre-1955 as I prefer the clothes of that time

History nerd alert: I just bought several sheets of uncut Swedish rationing coupons from WWI. They look really quaint and I'm going to frame them and put them on my kitchen wall - some of them, that is, because it's a whole stack. Only paid the equivalent of about £4 for the lot.

Miss Golighty, is that a gold dress?! If it is.... aaaah I am so jealous I have wanted a gold 50s or early 60s sheath dress for so long. I even found some great fabric to make one, and I have a nice simple pattern that would show it off beautifully- I just don't know when I'd wear it... I'm sure you'll find an occasion for this lovely, lovely frock though!

Onto more mundane things I just got this skirt and blouse for 99p on eBay. (they're not intended to be a set, they were just being sold together).

They're not vintage, at least not more than 80s or early 90s, and granted they don't look like much on the hanger, but it turns out that the blouse is a dead ringer for a 50s original in the flesh, and the skirt is a lot nicer than I had expected! More here.

Bit of a let down after that beautiful gold dress, but oh well, small successes eh?

Paul - thank you! I've said it before that I am leaning more towards the 60's of late - sheath dresses for daytime and evening - and for me the plainer the better (although some sparkly embellisment for evening is always welcome!).

Frenchy56 - thank you to you too! Yes, the dress is gold with gold piping detail - if you were looking for something similar there are a few dresses on Etsy along these lines (one very similar to the one I bought, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same maker). I was thinking it could be nice for my wedding anniversary next month or I might keep it for Christmas (very flashy and festive!), eitherway it will be worn!

Congrats on your finds on Ebay - 99p for both is incredible!
