Looks like just a store code, with possible size ("R37"). I think your dating is probably correct. Here's a later (dated 1954) Barker's label from a Harris tweed jacket:

Just by the looks of the coat at the oxfam link, it surely is 30's-40's.
Must be pre-1942, since no CC41 label is mentioned. Could be post-CC41 though... using older labels.

I wish there was a strong vintage store selection in my parts--I would love to find coats like these!! Even the outrageous ones are interesting, like the navy one with the fur lapels from Dinerman. A little decadent but maybe good for casual, fun occasions...

I'm considered odd for wearing a tie to my office (and my ties are rather sober). So a fur collared coat wouldn't be a problem for me.

OK, thanks for the dating. I assume that even about twenty-five years ago, London Fog's quality was better than what they make today. After using eBay, I doubt I'd buy an overcoat/trench/raincoat at full price. I think I've got myself a pretty good deal, I hope it fits well. How easily can a tailor generally adjust overcoats, with all their thick wool? Has anyone done that before?

It fits me like a glove and is really heavy duty.

Here's my 1940s Crombie, tailor-made in Dudley according to the label, which I'm about to repair part of the lining of, having torn it slightly, in preparation for the snowy weather we've got coming to the UK this week...

And my Christmas present from Lady Badger, which I've just retrieved from the tailor's – I had the massive shoulder pads reduced, as when wearing a structured jacket, the shoulders were nearly up by my ears! The smaller pads also give me a much-needed extra half-inch or so in the sleeve length...
