Show us your hair do's....

Please be honest. Can I carry off Bettie bangs? I know I have a round face, but...? I also have thick, wavy, fairly dry-and-coarse hair. I was thinking cutting some bulk out might be a good idea? I just want something with a bit more "fun" to it because fingerwaves still kick my butt... after all this time!

I REALLY think about a more Louise Brooks look but I think I'm too fat.

My hair has gotten a teensy bit longer since that pic but that's basically how it is.

Bettie bangs get such a bad rap for being "hard to pull off", but I think almost anyone can wear them. If you cut them super short they can be quite harsh, but trimmed to just above eyebrow length they're pretty universally flattering in my opinion. I think they'd look adorable on you!

I do think you can pull that off crwritt but that being said I have similar problems with my rolls but for different reasons. I have very straight hair. It is fine but there is lots and lots of it so I also tend to get way too much volume in my rolls. One thing that has helped a lot is using a mascara wand to roll my rolls with it gives them a tighter roll so they aren't as big.

I'll have to try winding them very tight sometime. My hair has lots of tensile strength, even though it has natural curl, it kind of resists being manipulated when its dry. I think I'd need to work with it damp, then hands off!I was thinking of clamping it in a long duckbill clip and winding it with that.
I just had a trim and my curls really jumped up, so I'll be enjoying my naturally curly style for a few days.

Its still really a middy type cut, but my stylist must have hit it lucky. She really didn't cut much off, but looks shorter.I have been going to the beauty school for trims, its a bit hit or miss, but usually comes out well if I'm very specific about what I want.

Viola, you are absolutley not fat, and you could definitely pull off bangs and/or a Louise Brooks-style bob. You have an oval face with a high forehead, which works well for bangs. I have a chin-length bob right now and it actually makes my face look thinner than a longer hairstyle. If you're really not certain, go to a wig shop and try different styles/lengths. You may be surprised at what works for you.

I agree with Rodeo Rose, contrary to popular belief Betty bangs when on the longer side suit most everybody. I don't know if this is fact, but even so, i watched the Betty Page story on dvd a while ago and there was a bit in the film where the photographer persuaded her to cut her bangs into the infamous style, as he reckoned her forehead was rather wide, so the straight bangs she had didn't suit her, he was right, and voila, an icon was born!

My hair. What a shanda. Vintage hair is admittedly not what I came to the Lounge for originally (as everyone can tell...) and generally I would just put it in a bun or a ponytail with a scarf and call it good. Or down with a hair flower. Nothing very complicated, because I am untalented with it.

As one who also has thick wavy hair, I'd say that either the Betty Bangs or the Louise bob would require
significant daily styling, since wavy hair just doesn't like to be blunt cut. The bottom edge ends up being very thick,
and you can get wacky frizz on top of that.
From my experience, take it as you will, thick wavy hair loves a layered cut. A bob with a side bang and a little layering at the bottom would take advantage of your natural wave.
If your layers are cut right you may find that finger waves will almost just happen.
Or, maybe you would consider a middy cut. It can look great unstyled, or you can pull the sides back, do rolls, etc.
As far as "thinning" or having bulk cut out of your hair, I would beware. Those short pieces left after the thinning job will tend to curl on their own and create more bulk and frizz.I had that done and so regretted it! Layering is a much better way to go.
If your hair is dry, regular conditioning is important. You might even consider skipping the shampoo and washing with conditioner.

Actually i think the bangs would be the lesser of the two evils. I have a hideous cowlick and wavy hair and i can get my bangs to behave by spraying lacquer on to a tail comb and brushing my bangs into submission.

But i think Crwritt is right with the suggestion of a middy style cut as it's so versatile and would be great with your waves.

By the way Viola the more i look at your picture the more you remind me of one of those lovely pre-raphelite beauties. Stunning.

This is how I do my rolls without curling my hair. (Curling my hair is near to impossible, but I had great luck with the hairband curling method). I pull my hair up into a section for the roll, spray the length with hair spray. I stick the clip in about half way (my hair is long), twirl the end of my hair around the clip, and then roll it up. I pin it with a bobby pin from the back and front of the roll, and then unclip it, and pin as needed.

Uust wrap it around and around as tight as it will go. It gives you an "all hair" roll, which holds up very well to hat squishing, clothes changing, and all sorts of other things. They are basically indestructible rolls, you can even nap on them and they look ok. If I do it damp, I hardly need any hairspray, although my hair is a bit harder to get even damp.

So I'm trying it out today! You can't really tell, but I've twisted it at the top like Antje. Only difference is I have put the back up with a hair rat, because my hair is a few days past washing :/

Great idea, thank you for posting it! I'm going to have to try this. I love victory rolls but am never satisfied with them, attempted wet or dry. I haven't had much luck wrapping them around a hairbrush handle or mascara wand either (all thumbs).

thank you so much Rosie Beau! I actually did a tutorial on how I roll it at the back a few months ago ... but I hate it! It makes me cringe big time! it's on my blog somewhere (you could do a search)... but ew ew ew I don't like it. I hope I get around to doing another one soon, I've been meaning to do a tutorial for victory rolls (and rolls in general) since I've been asked a few times now.

Crwritt- Your rolls look great. Your tip about wrapping the roll around a mascara wand was incredibly helpful. I managed MUCH better rolls a couple days ago but wasn't able to take pictures unfortunately.

Thanks so much for the compliments, it's really made my evening. As for my hair, I finally tried the hairband curling method. I think it is great for a quick, no fuss set. I still need to see if I can work out some kinks but otherwise this is a lazy girls best friend.
