Wow! What a nice collection - I especially like the two StG 44s. Something you don't see everyday. If I had the money they would be on top of my wish list, even before a decent WWII Thompson M1A1. Thanks for sharing.

Hi I'm from the BATF ...... Chilling words for any re-enactor or Californian. Nice collection I like that crate of "Eihandgrenaten 39s" a little known piece of Ordinace like the P-38 it was overshadowed by its predecessor. Funny how when the Germans simplified things they ended up better.

During WW2 Churchill found out his bodyguard was carrying a very small Browning pocket pistol. He went and got him a 1911 .45. Later, he discovered that the bodyguard thought it was "too heavy" and wasn't carrying it. So Churchill got it himself and shoved it in his overcoat pocket. In several pics taken during the summer of 1940, you can see the bulge in his pocket! What an inspiration!

That is one of the best little tidbits of history I've read yet on this site, and I've read a lot of good stuff here.

the grenades are all models, but they look good. The can and rack they are in was way more expensive!

what is really amazing is the '44 weapons simplification programs. The infantry uniform/equipment/weapons reads like GWOT 2008.

Ragnar I read on Bandos web site (101 abn) on how a US Paratrooper on D-Day used a MP44, he called it a "Buck Roger" gun. I read years ago in SOF magazine about the MG-42s propensity to self destruct. They surmised it fired so fast that it would fire out of battery. Yep the Germans had some neat toys.

The chance of a MG42 firing out of battery and destroying the gun is slim to none. Not saying it never happens/happened but it is no more a concern than just about any gun blowing.

it happens from bolt bounce and since the end of the war most people have used an anti bounce device in the bolt assembly that also slows the ROF to about 1200.

It is interesting, the Beretta 92 became all the rush for a while, then Glock came in (and they do make a dependable indestructible gun), but the run is now back to the old 1911, probably the most popular Automatic Pistol ever made.

One day I'd love to have a nice vintage P08 Luger though.

I like Lugers too, although I'm partial to the 1900 models. Quite a complex piece of machinery for that time period.

The only marks on it are "MMOTT" The only saddlery/leather shop that I can find named Mott is located in Mott, North Dakota but I can't find anything else about them. Mott, ND was established in 1903 so the town is in the right era. Unfortunately, Mott is a popular name in the Dakotas. I'll probably never know who made it for certain.

I bought it from a guy who said that an old U.S Marked Luger Model 1900 American Eagle was in it (one of the original 1000 guns tested and used by the US military at the turn of the century). IMHO. he should have kept them together but then I wouldn't have had a chance to buy it as I can't afford a genuine U. S. M1900 AE (5 figures). Obviously the holster was made by someone with great skill.

i'm going to take a guess here that Hollywood may have contributed to that with Die Hard and Lethal Weapon...maybe not all the credit but it can't be denied that Hollywood has an influence on trends...whether it be fashion, firearms, or whatever...

First the US Army dropped the Colt 1911A1 for the Beretta 92 as the designated sidearm. There were reasons given that the female recruits had a had a hard time racking the slide of the 45 and using 9mm made it so we were using the same ammo as our Nato allies.

There was also the ongoing developement of Wonder Nines as they were called, high capacity 9mm hand guns that were well manufactured, accurate and easy to shoot. Law Enforcement saw these 9mm pistols as good for the street over revolvers as the bad guys were out gunning them right and left. The demand swelled as agency after agency made the move to Wonder Nines.

These moved 9mm including the Beretta to the forefront of the public eye and Hollywood picked up on that.

Later, several famous shootings where Law Enforcement suffered because the 9mm was under performing and not providing one shot stops of the bad guys, we see developement of 10mm (again) 40 cal 41AE and so on.

Developement of better perfoming ammo such as "plus p" and "plus p plus" has brought the 9mm round up to spec in most scenarios, but shot placement usually is the most important factor. In order to protect the bad guys and they even took Black Talons off the market for civilians.

Ah the .45 vs 9mm debate still rages ! I'm partial to the ACP myself. Years ago my buddy owned a Luger. His was ammo sensitive maybe he was using reloads but that thing was always jamming. He also had a G-43 back then a beautiful rifle. Unfortunately shooting crappy Egyptian Ammo blew the slide in half.

With good ammo the 9mm is an excellent round. I'm just of the school of thought that says "A 9mm might expand, but a .45 won't shrink". A friend of mine was just in a shootout where he hit a felon, who had just shot another cop, with 2 rounds of .40 S&W 180 grain Hydrashocks. One in the head and one through and through center mass. The perp survived, cockroach rules. Nothing short of a nuke is 100% for sure.

Now you're talkin'. The weapon in my avatar is a Colt Ultra Ten ll, 10mm. It was some kind of dealer stocking promo gun, I think. Serial number on mine is only 3-digits long. It's a fun gun and it throws a helluva round down range.

Your friend needed the 10mm that Gene has. While, the FBI adopted the 10mm (well even if for only 10 min until they figured their guys didn't do well with the recoil), it's a gun with lots of impact.
