A couple more things, Major. Minwax Mahogany Red is an excellent match for the shellac used on those. Also, if you pick up a Model 44, the sights are regulated with the bayonet extended. The sights on the Mosins are excellent, especially if you find a Finn. And the interrupter mechanism in the magazine means you cannot misload the rimmed cartridges as you can on the SMLE.

Oh, and now that you have a Mosin, you need this link:

Did you mean this link? :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcXVVlqT1W4

But alas,..after cleaning and checking the bore at the muzzle of my relic, it is not fit to shoot. :( The bore is about a millimeter too big all around a bullet set down into the muzzle. In fact, a bullet drops all the way down to the shoulder on the shell! My Mosin is no better than a revolutionary era, smooth bore musket, and probably about as accurate from20 or 30 yards.
Oh well, there will be another sale and perhaps I get one with a good barrel, or if not I can get a barrel to replace a shot out one, and I've got a good bolt, firing pin, etc.
I did in fact get what I had asked for, an octagon receiver model that is older and more collectable, and will look good displayed on a wall. The sheer history of it is cool. It may have whacked many a nazi in it's day, so it deserves an honorable retirement.

The best case scenario is that the muzzle has been counterbored to remove the worst part of the rifling wear (at the muzzle). Have you checked carefully to see if the rifling starts about a half inch or so back from the very end? A uniform millimeter of "wear" all around may actually be the result of drilling the front out. It sounds a bit much for the usual shooting/cleaning wear.
It may be that it is uniformly worn out over the whole barrel length, but I have seen several old military rifles that have had the counterbore treatment. It's not as good as having good original rifling, but some actually don't shoot too badly having been counterbored.

Hmm,....something to consider. Thanks for the tip. I can see rifling when I shine a light in it and look down the barrel, just not crisp of course. I might just try doing a slug test that I saw online. Consists of tapping the proper sized lead slug down the length of the barrel with a wooden dowel to check the depth of the grooves.
I will grab another one when they go on sale again. For 80 bucks I can't go wrong. This time though I'll manifest a newer model with better rifling. :)

Drove past one of the big box sporting goods stores this evening on my way to the post office, and just for the heck of it I stopped in to see if they too had any Mosins. Sure enough, they had a few on sale for 99.99. Got a more recent round receiver model 1943 dated rifle this time. Guaranteed by the importer,(American Tactical Imports) to be a good shooter. So far so good, passes the bullet test and the firing pin headroom is good. Sights are supposedly checked and adjusted. Wood is good. Machined metal parts look like they were made in a few hours, but the action is good. Even the trigger feels right. This is the one I can rely on for some plinking.

While on the subject of Mosin Nagants...

Here's a Mosin M38 carbine I picked up recently. It's 1944 dated but it's now wearing a post-war laminated stock. The bore is perfect with bright, shiny grooves and sharp lands. Because of the short barrel, the fireball when you fire it is about a large as a basketball!

Another new toy...

I picked up this sporterized BSA Martini Cadet Rifle today. At some point in its life it had been re-barreled for .357 Magnum. I had it at the range today and it is a real hoot to shoot!

Nice find. I have enjoyed shooting pistol caliber carbines...a lot easier on the wallet. Will it shoot 38 special as well like other 357 magnums?

It definitely will. I was shooting it with .357 158gr semi-wadcutter loads today (and it was doing quite nicely at 100 yards), and I'm going to see if .38 Special semi-wadcutter loads will be any more or less accurate.

Excellent! I'd like to find a carbine too, but the importer for this retailer here is fresh out I'm told.
Too bad. But the first place I bought one from here last week, has them on sale again this week for 80 bucks. At that price I'm compelled to get me a third. Maybe even 4. Just the collectable aspect of owning these is reason enough, and the price can't be beat.
If I keep on, I'll have a regular arsenal for a third world country!
