I understand that long ago, postage was due upon receipt. Nice!
Were this crop of retirees the only generation to do that? NO! Let's go back in time; WWI, Spanish-American War, Civil War, Mexican-American War, War of 1812. The generation of retirees did nothing that other generations hadn't done before them. What have they done lately, besides want everyone's taxes raised to pay for themselves? What do they want? To save every last penny because they want to leave something to their children? They should pay their own way. Toiling in the factories? Have people stopped working? People are still toiling today. No one has any contempt for old people, just leeches who want and expect something for nothing.dr greg said:Originally Posted by Lincsong

My answer; rabbit ears work fine, there's 16 on air channels in the Bay Area. Seems like everything for the generation is; "gimmee, gimmeee, gimmee, free, free, free".
Would that be the generation that fought several wars for the values our society espouses, or toiled in the factories as the grinding wheels of capitalism?. No use for them anymore? How dare they have a rest, this retirement business has to go.There was a movie made back in the 60's where everyone over the age of 35 was killed and the young ruled...would that be your utopia?
I might also ask why, if old people are so contemptible, do you want to wear their clothes?

dr greg said:So let me get this right, people who have fought for their country and/or worked all their lives have no rights at all in the society they built, let alone the chance of maybe getting a little bit back for all the social capital they invested. It's dog eat dog, and the devil take the hindmost, you're only as good as your last stroke of luck.
If that's your ideal view of society, you better hope you never get a hole in your boat.
I'd advise you to read a book called The Mountain People

but going by your comments, you don't strike me as someone interested in what happens to other people...

dr greg said:It's not about cable TV. it's about a perceived attitude to those older or less fortunate, and it strikes me as having fairly ruthless undertones, which obviously suits some.

dr greg said:I'm not surprised that social capital is an unknown concept to you, sir, going by the spiritual bankruptcy of your comments so far, but I have better things to do than connect the dots for you: one thing I have learnt in my long life is that a closed mind can only be opened by itself.
