Shave oil: Jojoba oil, Tea Tree, and Peppermint blend from ebay
Merkur HD 34c w/Merkur super platinum blades
Edwin Jagger black badger brush
Taylor of Old Bond Street lavender shaving soap (served in a wooden bowl)
Edwin Jagger sandalwood aftershave lotion

Decided to make the switch to safety razors a few weeks back after a string of horrific shaves at the hands of a Wilkinson Sword four blade monstrosity (I swear WS invented razor burn), and I have to say its the most sensible purchase I've made in, well, ever.

Still working out my cutting angle and have suffered a few nicks as a consequence, but I've actually started taking pleasure in the act of shaving instead of viewing it as being inconvenient and frustratingly necessary. I was also staggered by the quality of the badger brush after years of habitually using a ghastly £3.99 synthetic thing that could never produce a proper lather.

SFEND002, If I may suggest. Forget against the grain for now. Shower, oil, lather and go with the easy areas until you get the angle right. Finish with the razor you are comfortable with. Plenty of time to develop more of a non-mutilating technique. Oh and don't forget the alum block.

Thanks for the tip. I went all the way today. First with then against the grain with better results. I had to keep telling myself to not use pressure to avoid cuts. It went pretty well, still not as good as a mach 3 but maybe in the future.

From what I see, you guys sure do have some nice shaving accessories. Are they mostly purchased online? I have found very little around here, and I have done some looking.

Yep, Internet shopping is where you will find the best selection and deals for wet shaving supplies.

A few top-notch vendors for you:
http://westcoastshaving.com/ - Blade Sampler Packs

http://www.leesrazors.com/ - General Selection, Merkur Razors

http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/index.html - Overall selection

I also vigorously recommend www.badgerandblade.com as a wonderful forum for all things shaving.

That is a Swedish M98 bayonet, given to me by a good friend and fellow weapon's collector yesterday.

It looks like it has seen more use as a garden tool than as a bayonet though.

He also presented me with an old straight razor strop :)

It pretty much descripes what this vacation has been about:

-Hunting for shaving gear at fleamarkets, friends with old houses and elderly family members (will post my scores later).
-Hiking and photographing
-Bonding with my father-in-law. An old sailorman that looks like a pirate, talks like a pirate (yes, he actually says ARRRRG) and walks like a pirate:

A nice man - but he can be quite intimidating :)
