A few years ago I played a show and Kyle and his band were on the same bill. I was pretty impressed with him and his band actually.

Haven't checked in here in a while. This album (above) is truly fantastic. 2 really smooth customers.

The series of Gerry Mulligan and … meets … with … etc. are wonderful. My favourite is Mulligan meets Monk.

I went to see Jon Hendricks of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross fame at Ronnie Scotts in November. Still going strong at 80 years old or so. A very nice evening.

I've been rediscovering early country, and up into the 50s. We should start a thread about male 2 part close harmony. The unequalled masters, below. You can see them desperately looking at each other to induce a switch of parts. Apparently Ira would step on Charlie's foot to let him know he was about at the edge of his range and they should do the switcheroo. Then of course they switch back. All this occurring sometimes mid-word. Amazing vocal control. Great stuff.

As of late I have been listening to the Beau Hunks Saxaphone Soctette CD's Contrasts, self titled cd and Manhattan Minuett cd.

www.bastamusic.com click on catalog, call up the beau hunks and they list the cd's, you can click on a cd and then click on info for the cd there is a place to click on to listen.

Also the Beau Hunks have some videos on you tube that are neat.

That Anita O'Day clip is tremendous. Jazz on a Summer's Day...ahhh.... I like the shots of "regular" people in the crowd. Where did all the hipster jazz chicks go???

I was looking for a copy of "Jazz On A Summer's Day" and the last copy I looked at on Amazon was for more than $100.

Her version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" is the only version I can voluntarily listen to- after listening to jazz for about 30 years or so I have heard that song hundreds of times. I listen to this clip practically once a day these days- it feels like brushing my teeth. Necessary and refreshing.

Something else I'm concerned with these days - Paul Gonsalves' solo at Newport in '56.

I think I look like no one, though one gent I knew said I looked a bit like Kim Catrall with freckles like Sissy Spacek .
My man looks a lot like Don Ameche!! Just recently saw him in "Heaven Can Wait" at the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto.

Bird and Diz playing Groovin High (Whispering) has always moved me so. I love how the Bebopers took all these commercial songs and changed a little here, put in a few chord inversions there, and BAM, a piece of magic.

One of the most seemingly un-discovered Hard Bop jazz albums ever must be Lee Morgan's "The Sixth Sense", listening now on vinyl, through a restored room-heater tube amp player... a "perfect" album of its genre; the twisted harmonies are so mesmirizing, never can listen to it just once...

Perhaps partly underrated/unknown due to the award-winningly-Hideous cover "art", and the fact that the era of hard bop had mostly passed - by the time this was waxed in Nov. 1967, it seems folks were interested in Free Jazz. One of the last really great Blue Note albums (not counting stuff since its 1980s resurrection), obviously after Liberty/United Artists Inc had taken over complete control of Blue Note cover design, even changing the label logo to look more like Liberty's own...

But hey, all this makes it easier to score a vinyl copy for cheap (especially for original 1960's Blue Notes), if you're so inclined. Check out those wicked harmonies...

I thoroughly enjoy Jazz. Most all genres and from different time periods. The sound of the Chanteuse is my favorite style; in Elle Fitzgerald and Nina Simone from the past, and through Diana Krall, Patricia Barber and Renee Olstead nowadays.

The smooth jazz of Earl Klugh, Fourplay, Paul Hardcastle and the Jazzmasters, the hip mode of Harry Connick Jr and Candy Dulfer, and Miles Davis’s classic sound all suit me in different ways and at different times too.

Additionally, a fresh artist with a lounge jazz style has recently emerged in the superb Miss Melody Gardot. A voice reminiscent of the past, but still with a personal elegance that distinguishes her from the rest. Those that enjoy the Golden era will likely enjoy her sound.

Appreciate all the opinions and personal recommendations in this thread...leaves many things yet to be explored.
