Shanghai'd Rita Hayworth-style pin curls in short hair?

Can anyone explain how to replicate this style--Rita Hayworth's famous "Lady from Shanghai" short hairstyle? I assume it was acheived with pin curls or hot rollers, right? About how long would one's hair need to be?

Hi, I thought I replied to this earlier but my message seems to have vanished - how very odd.

I looked up the hairdo as the link doesn't work for me, and they are definitely pin curls and quite a tricky set too. I would curl standing pin curls away from the face at the top and perhaps even at the side, as the waves there are quite voluminous. Her hair here is really quite short too and I think the right cut would be key.
