Seeking Opinion: Yoke Or No Yoke

Superfluous

Missing in action
JC is ready to make my Modoc in dark brown goat. I am on the fence about whether to include the yoke, or to eliminate the yoke. The Modoc usually comes with a straight yoke (see below photo). I am not interested in a peak yoke. JC can eliminate the yoke altogether. That was initially my inclination. Then, upon reconsideration, I noticed that the straight yoke interacts really well with the straight lines of the action back/side gussets, and the absence of the yoke might not be desirable given the action back (my jacket will not have the two pleats). I found the below photo of an action back without a yoke and it seems a bit void at the top. While I usually like clean designs, this seems almost too clean. What are your thoughts?

The yoke on the Modoc is actually slightly curved. I think John's is less so than say the Kelso iteration. I'm tempted to leave it alone or go straight across.

I would keep the yoke. I think half belts look better with them, especially with straight yokes. It's not a big deal because I still think it looks good, but if I could go back and order my Aero Half belt with a straight yoke instead of a peaked yoke, I would.

I vote keep the yoke. I'm pumped you're getting goatskin. We don't see many non-military goatskin jackets. I look forward to seeing the final product.

This has always been a dilemma for me and I was constantly on the verge of going with the yoke, until I changed my mind in the last second. I don't know, I actually prefer the look of it but figured it would be wiser to have a clean looking jacket in the long run. Retrospectively, I wish I had a jacket with the back yoke so yeah, I would leave it - but I would definitely ask for a straight yoke! The curved yoke on the first picture just isn't doing it for me.

Goat is great stuff. I wish it would pick up character quicker but it looks great worn.

I love the look both ways. I went for a plain back on my bootlegger but spec'd my 30's HB with a yoke. I think with any kind of action back or shoulder gusset the yoke brings a balance and symmetry to the back design as a whole.

I'm just behind you in the queue for this very jacket Superfluous so I'm looking forward to seeing yours.

Personally I'm going 100% with the classic Californian sportswear look, thats why I'm going for a GW. Half of the appeal of this jacket is the back, yoke and all.

It might be interesting to be able to compare yours (if you go yoke-less) with mine when mine arrives but thats a huge gamble just for curiosities sake lol

I'm with the majority go with the yoke.

I'm a big fan of the Californian I have two versions of this jacket and I can't imagine a version without the yoke.

On my two Californian the yoke is slightly curve and I like it a lot.

Even though the yoke less jacket is actually mine, i vote keep the yoke.

It works very well, i like how it balances the bottom half belt and the pleats, very cool.

And your yoke-less is cool as Hell. Makes for a very solid argument to omit it. I love that jacket man and I don't think yours would be improved with a yoke, it's a racer not a halfbelt.
