Securing an Akubra Traveller in the Wind. What Works?

Hello, All — Long‑time lurker, first‑time poster.

I’ve got an Akubra Traveller in Regency Fawn that has become my exclusive travel/adventure hat. On my last trip I nearly lost it while riding in an open‑air truck, and with an upcoming trip to Africa I’d like to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

I’m looking for a reliable way to add a wind strap or chin‑strap arrangement to the Traveller. I know Akubra makes the wire clip anchors, but I’m not sure how well they work with the Traveller’s fabric sweatband, fine stitching, and crushable felt. Before I start modifying anything, I’d love to hear from people who’ve actually undertaken this.

A few specific questions:

  • Has anyone used the Akubra wire clips on the Traveller specifically? How secure were they, and did they cause any distortion or wear?
  • Has anyone tried sewn‑in loops, internal anchors, or other low‑impact solutions?
  • Has anyone run a cord around the crown or through the brim on this model, and how did that hold up?
I’m open to any methods that have worked for you — especially ones that don’t damage the hat or deform the brim.

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.
