Fair enough. And I say, the best way to appreciate and respect skin-bearing humans is to kill them, eat their meat, and make a fine lampshade from their hide. Why else are you here?

I am afraid, that is a deep philosophical question, that great minds have thought about for thousands of years.(why are you here?) On the other hand, I know very well why meat, and skin sources are here. :) Without them, you would not be writing on this forum, because I doubt you or anyone else here would be around. Choosing only to limit a human's diet is a recent thing. And, if worldwide food crops failed tomorrow, the grazers would die out fairly fast. I would still be around, as long as the deer kept eating twigs. The hunting and gathering societies would have never moved up, and evolved, without a reliable, and easily procurred protein source. But, heck, I was an Anthropology major in college, so I may have been schooled, only by omnivores.

It is easy to be a Pita member, when the vegatables are abundant. Not so easy when they are not. I am going on the record as thinking they are mostly idiots, divorced from reality. A worldwide crop failure would sort these folks out rather quickly. Attitudes change very quickly, when your stomach has been growling for a week. Warm and cuddly notions are thrown by the wayside. Many times convictions are only held by folks with plenty of resources, and a full belly.

My notion is a true Pita member should live by their conscience. I think it is hypocritical for them to use any modern medicine to help overcome an illness. Most of these meds were tested on animals prior to giving it to humans. Many of those animals died in the testing. When they start doing that, in great numbers, they will be seen for exactly what they are. But, it will not change my view of them. There were ingorant(that is the act of ignoring basic truths,ignor-ance) of the way the world has always worked, and that they got here only through their meat eating and skin using ancestors. Their own existence is predicated on using animals for food, and shelter.

It just cracks me up. Fedora

No offense intended

Jeremy,
I appreciate your thoughtful response. I am sure we could have a great discussion about our two points of view.

The orginal post was on a 100+ year old newspaper ad. It then moved to someone saying they didn't understand the big deal over killing seal pups.

Now it's "do you eat meat?" what's the big problem?

Well as a meat eater, but not in every meal and having grown up on a livestock farm, I know a few things about killing animals for food.

It's not as simple as "Do you eat meat? then no discussion. This thread was started as to seals and lead to harp seals and harp seal pups.

It's like saying, "Do you breathe air? Then don't complain about pollution!"

I wear vintage beaver fur hats, I wear leather. Now as to the hats, they're 50+ years old. As to the leather, it's horse. The entire animal is used. Meat, bones, guts, hooves.. Seal pups are skined and then the rest is left for the polar bears... of course they're being killed by pollution... ah the circle of life.

That is the issue some people have with modern seal. As to vintage, I'm with Kurtz, if it fits me I'm wearing it.

I don't belong to Peta nor do I know much about them. I'm just not into the crule treatment of animals. Some are, I'm not.

Shamus,
I was responding to the PETA portion of the thread, trying to show some of the hypocracy I have seen from some people who are very vocal about the superiority of their beliefs but not very thoughtful about the implications of their daily actions. Those two questions usually bring some reality into what is often a purely emotional discussion.

I don't condone cruelty, indiscriminant killing, or taking rare species. I do believe that it is better to look at all the effects of my decisions. From growing up on a farm, I am sure you are aware of some of these effects more than most people. I just don't like being lectured by people who are indirectly doing what they are condemning me for doing (some PETA/animal rights folks).

This may have gotten too far off the original post, but it is extremely interesting for me to hear all your opinions.
