Screen Names...

[Snookie]

This thread is so fun! Hearing why everyone chose certain names for themselves offers such insight. A pyschological snatshot of how we want to present ourselves.

I chose Snookie because it's a nickname that a couple of lindy hoppers went by back in the 40's. My friend criticized it because it sounds too much like "nookie". Oh, well!

I was sitting in a coffee shop with a friend of mine and when trying to figure what to go ahead and call myself... he said... "I don't know what you want to call yourself, but you're a good gent" (He's a Brit btw). Looking at my prized Borsalino...I said "Yeppers, that's it...FedoraGent."

[Polyhistor]

I can´t remember exactly when I got the idea to use Polyhistor as my screen name, but being a great admirer of scholars from the ancient world, the middle ages and the early modern times (Leonardo da Vinci jumps to mind, but he´s only just the tip of the eisberg) who would try to accumulate all the knowledge of their time (or at least as much as possible) it seemed adequate.

Though "knowing everything" is plain impossible (as much as it was then), I do believe that one should try to keep an open mind and learn as much as one can, in order to not get the kind of tunnel vision that comes with modern over-specialisation, because when you concentrate on one and only one subject exclusively, it´s quite likely you´ll lose the ability to spot connections and, can´t keep some kind of necessary critical distance to your own work.

That´s about it.

I was thinking about Captain Canada but that title changes every year. Yes Canada elects a national hero every few years and gives them the title of Captain Canada. Furthermore I have never shouted "BEAVERS UP" when running into battle (If you don't know, don't ask) Captain Canuck was next on the list but I have never got super powers from a landed meteor in the Canadian north. Besides I just don't look good in skin tight red pants. Major Mapleleaf, I never served in the armed forces. Canada Jack, my name is not Jack. . Johnny Canuck, my name is John, I am a Canuck, seemed to fit.

I stole mine from someone else at another board, who fashioned theirs after Strider from LOTR. Every name I kept trying was taken, not to mention the really stupid names I came up with. So I thought I would try Strider. [huh] It seems to have worked in several other boards since, so I'm happy with it, and the person I stole it from doesn't care either.

I use B-17 Pilot because I'm tired of driving my Dodge Intrepid around!! I've loved WWII aviation my whole life and you CAN dream can't you!!??

My screen name is explaned very simple: J. stands for Juergen, my first name - B. stands for my nick name Bonny, which was given to me 22 years ago - and Saxon is just the translation of my german last name. So the name was created and used as my reenactors alias since nearly two decades. Simple but long lasting.

Your name reminds me of an old mens clothing store that was once in my home town....J.B. Sax. Some of my best 1940s neckties have his label on them.

I used to be in an improvisational comedy group. The only two girls in the group were both named Colleen, so we each used contractions of our first and last names. She's ColleenK'y; I'm ColleenC'y. It really stuck, as we are addressed like this, sign emails thusly, and I use it for all online endeavors.
