I am also thinking of buying this brand/model. Any owners out there who have feedback on Schott's antiqued biker jacket (585)? I have a size 46 chest. Not sure if I like the extra patches on the elbows. Still trying to decide. They would come in handy if I'm riding my Bonneville and go down, but other than that, still not sure. Here are some questions I have:

1. How thick is the leather?
2. Do you like the color?
3. How is the fit in the shoulders? Too roomy? I have kinda big shoulders but not "house" sized.
4. Does it need breaking in?
5. How would you rate it compared with an Aero. I love Aeros and am debating getting a vintage looking brown jacket from Aero instead of this Schott or a brown
Vanson Mercury.
6. Does the style of this model jacket really look vintage to you? It looks fairly modern to me.

Not feeling it.

If you want a vintage look, I say go with real vintage.

Take a look at Insurrection's website. If you find something you like, take the drive up to Seattle ;)

Aero and Schott are two totally different types of jackets made for two totally different types of customers. Schott's leather is pliable and doesn't even need any breaking in while Aero's FQHH leather is freakin' crazy stiff.

What we find in the shop is that people who like Schott jackets really aren't impressed by Aero jackets and people who like Aero jackets really don't like Schott jackets. You just need to find out which type you are...

Vanson can go either way...some who like Schott jackets will like Vanson and MANY who like Aero jackets like Vanson. For some, Vanson is the cream of the crop, as Aero is just "too much" and Schott just "isn't enough."

It's all about what you want...

I just bought this Schott jacket and it is as thick and stiff as any other leather I've seen.

I've owned a Vanson Model B and this jacket is every bit as thick and stiff as Vansons competition weight cowhide. I was really surprised when I got it, I was expecting it to be like other Schott leathers I've owned that were like buttery soft, but it wasn't at all, it easily stands up on its own, I was really impressed with the leather. I took these off my phone which takes lousy pictures, with the flash it makes the hide look shinier than it is, it has a more matte finish.

It just so happens I work with someone who owns this jacket and I've seen it up close:

1. How thick is the leather?
It's a heavy jacket but not overly thick, certainly good enough for daily use and doesn't feel like a fashion jacket at all. I wouldn't wear it on a bike, too long and baggy fit IMO.
2. Do you like the color?
Yes, but it looks considerably lighter than in the photos above
3. How is the fit in the shoulders? Too roomy? I have kinda big shoulders but not "house" sized.
I don't really know, the dude is a lot bigger than me so I couldn't try it on. But it definitely has a loose fit cut
4. Does it need breaking in?
Not at all

I really don't know how it stacks up to an Aero I've never seen one in the states, guys I ride with wear Schott, Vanson, or Langlitz for the most part, some n00bs wear Harley dealer garbage :)

I don't think it looks particularly vintage but after significant wear it probably can take on a vintage look. I think it's a sharp looking jacket, but again I wouldn't wear it on a bike.

Hi gents
I own one of these jackets in XL, worn for about two weeks before I decided it was too big, it's in excellent condition. If anyone is interested in buying I'll sell for £200 + postage or make an offer. PM me if interested.
Here are some pics I took when I was going to put it on ebay but never got round to it.

Too big for me, but it's a good deal.

Hey Hammer,
I was interested in the 585 until I actually examined one in person. I didn't like the artificial aging done to the seam areas. It looked like someone used a sander on those areas, and to my eye was not appealing or authentic. Reminded me somewhat of the "distressed" look seen in many inexpensive mall jackets of the Indy Jones era. I did not like the cheapness of the buckle hardware on the sides of the waist. The leather was OK thickness for a riding jacket, but in general the jacket did not feel or fit like a riding jacket. It felt more like a nice-fitting heavier casual jacket. I'm a rider, and have plenty of experience wearing poorly-chosen gear!
Why take my word for it? Your profile says Portland OR, so head on down to the Latus Harley dealer off 205. That's where I checked it out. Call'em and see if they still have it in stock.
In my opinion you could get a great custom made jacket from Johnson Leathers in SF for less.

Thaddeus, thanks for the input and welcome to the Lounge.

Also, are you guys forgetting the thread a few years back about Schott using a relatively thin HH but attaching a plastic backing of some type (don't remember now what it was) to the hide to make it appear more substantial than it actually was? So, what one feels in thickness and toughness may actually be a man made substance attached to the hide to give it that feeling. One of our members discovered this when he had some work done on his Schott HH jacket.

PC.

Schott doesn't line their HH jackets anymore, I verified that before I ordered it. the jacket also has exposed edges where it connects to the liner and you can see the thickness of the hide (sans felt fusing), I measure it and it is 3.5 ounce HH. Also I don't think Schott would ever put in a hide less than 1.2 - 1.4 mm thick for a motorcycle jacket, to accuse them of that could be real damaging for their company so I would verify that before repeating they use thin hides. There are too few American companies like Schott around to gossip about and possibly damage their reputation. Even when their jackets had the felt fusing (it was felt not plastic if I recall, used to smooth out the hide) they were still all 1.3 mm hides, as they have to be for proper protection as an MC jacket.

I think Thaddeus was addressing the original jacket discussed not the HH jacket I posted too.

I did a search for that old thread before I posted, but without success. Glad to know Schott is no longer using that process; something about it just didn't seem right. I have a Schott Cafe Racer in steer, and it is a good quality motorcycle jacket. Wear it mostly in mild weather as it is a fitted jacket without much room for layering.
