Will the repair blending techniques in this thread

work on this divot in my Open Road?

I'd like to hide it, but am afraid of making it more noticeable. It's not too very obvious now when I'm wearing it.

Thanks for any advice.

That appears to be a very nice hat in very nice condition. I would strongly urge that you do NOT take sand paper to this hat. This is a very minor divot and rather an easy fix. If you continue to be scared, I can do it for you.

When repairing moth divots, I suggest using the following method.

Steam the area heavily, and keep it steamy while working
Take a needle or pin point and gently pull the felt from around the divot toward the oposite side of the divot. Pull the pinpoint from the edge through the divot. Circle around the divot using this method gently to pull the fur fibers from around the divot into it. Each time, while the hat is steamy, press on the felt left in the center of the divot and compact it. Repeat as necessary and finish off with a touch of spray stiffener or hair spray. Be sure that your hands and everything is clean, as you don't want a dark spot filling the divot on this light colored hat.

The above method always works for me. I use a gentle but quick scratching motion. However, repair your divot at your own risk.

I don't suppose this method works on anything but hats?

I have a lovely 40's suit jacket that's riddled with mothholes. I'm told it will cost an average of $20/hole to fix!

Divot, not on the putting green

The pin/needle scratch and pull the surrounding fibers works well for smaller divots. The one in your Open Road looks very deep. The trick on this one, is lucky for you....at the edge. You can have a wider brim binding installed and it will cover the divot.

Another trick it to turn the hat body inside out. This is a drastic remedy. Requires reblocking, and complete reassembly of binding, ribbon, sweat and liner. You need the blocks and the tools to do this. I have seen hatters do this when the hat is badly faded or has a "surface" divot, not thru and thru.

I hate moths.
