Hi all,
Recently, I made a post asking for reviews on High Large Leather since I found a Chinese dealer carrying those gems. After ups and downs, I finally got my hand on one of those pieces from this obscure brand, and would like to write a short review on it since I got so many helps in the original post.
The style I bought is the Storm Rider, I opted for that because it’s more unique than the type I and type II, and I already have horsehide trucker leather jackets from Fine Creek Leathers and Schott (I am also going to make post to sell the latter for 2/3 to half of the original price with mint condition so thumb up if you are interested). My jacket came from 2024 batch and the fits are different batch to batch so pay attention before you buy one.
Fit: This one really fits true to size. I am 6ft, 203-205lbs (my weight is deceiving though, I look more like 180lbs than 205lbs). I got size 42 and this one fits me like a glove. With a thick, heavyweight T-shirt underneath, I still have some room; and with a mid-weight sweatshirt or sweater, it fits snuggly. People usually say HLL runs small, but it’s not the case for 2024 batch. The measurements are: shoulder 47cm, chest 110cm, sleeve length 66cm, length 64cm.
Leather: They claim to use 2.3mm horsehide, but I feel like this one is 1.5mm maximum, not sure how to check it. Nevertheless, the leather feels really substantial, but not too stiff. Indeed, it gives a supple and meaty feeling, and I had no trouble putting it on for the first time, no break in required. In my original, someone commented it might feel impossible to button up. That is not the case, I only had difficulty with buttoning it up for the first few times. After that, it only took me a few seconds to button and unbutton it. The leather is vegetable tanned with a luscious black color, the color suggests that it’s semi-aniline finish although it’s not specified in their website. This one is definitely not from Shinki as I have multiple Shinki pieces and this one feels totally different. I am curious which tannery made it. Let me know if you have more information!
Lining: the 2024 batch added wool to the lining. The lining makes it feel warmer, but harsher on your skin. My skin felt itchy when I wear a T-shirt or a thin shirt underneath. This is the only thing that I dislike about it.
Construction: The construction is great but definitely not top-notch. The stitches are pretty straight in general, but not as high stitch count as a Freewheelers or a Rainbow Country. There are some loose stitches too (see photos below). The stitches suggest that it’s lockstitch, but I am not 100% sure, let me know if you think they use a different stitching technique.
Overalls, it is a very high quality piece and I am happy with this purchase. It also has a unique look as there are not a lots of Lee Stormrider style leather jacket out there.
