Replacement Hat Feathers - Where to Buy??

Sorry if this topic has been brought up before but I did`nt find anything on it doing forum searches.

Are there any manufacturers that sell a variety of replacement feathers? Would an actual hat shop or habidasher`s be the best bet? I would like to replace the 2 small feathers on my fedora with nice fresh and full ones but sticking to original colors of yellow and green.

Which color feathers would work well and brighten up a brown felt w/2" brown ribbon?

There are many interesting places to get these types of things.

For a quick replacement of feathers, one of the more convenient routes might be with Miller hats.

Feathers For Hats

They don't allow for choosing specific colors but their "grab bag" should include enough variety to test which colors you like in that hat.

Similarly, David Morgan Hat Feathers are also an option in addition to being less expensive.

Two places to start for feathers of that type.

Edit: Tone's choice is the best.
Lamplight Feathers is a good place to start. Look up the rooster feathers. There'll be a listing for goose feathers which are the best. You bundle up a 1 or 2 bright goose feathers, maybe add a couple of those wispy turkey feathers, bundle them together at the stems with string or a piece of electric tape and trim the feather height to fit.

Or go for the simple look and just trim and place 1 feather in your hat ribbon.

Hi,

The hat makers, for the most part, still include feathers with hats. They're mostly dyed chicken feathers, but there are plenty of nice-looking ones. Most folks don't want the feathers, so when a hat is sold and the feather is unwanted, it is removed and placed in a tray on the counter where another customer could just pick out a feather or two.

The hat makers also have bags of extra feathers in their catalog for little money, so I expect that's what comes in the grab bag mentioned already.

Thanks a lot everybody! My feather procuremnt dilema has vanished on the wind.

So the replacements are bound together at their bases so you just gently insert them between the ribbon and the felt? Seems to me that a nice fedora withou at least a small feather just is`nt complete.

*update* another member has offered to send me some feathers since he bought in bulk before.How cool is that?? I`ve still bookmarked these sites though.

You might also try your local fly shop. A good one will have a variety of nice feathers from which to choose.

Aside from making Bamboo Fly Rods, I tie flies. If you find a tackle shop that specializes in fly fishing and fly tying supplies; you'll find a nice selection of feathers. And if the shop owner is generous; he may even have some things he will give you when he knows the purpose for the use of them.

Also.....on e-bay, search feathers, you'll be supprised what you come accross.

I love 'em!

Had a Ka as a rental once in NL and loved it. little motor but lots of heart and lots of room for a small package. It had hat clearance too.

Off topic but I couldn't leave the Ka ad alone.

Sporting goods places like Gander Mountain, or Cabela's have bags of feathers for tying flies.

I know that a lot of folks don't seem to like the feathers but I personally enjoy them. I'll have to check out the fly feathers idea. I think there's a shop here in my town.

David Morgan sells hat feathers, 5 assorted for $4. My first Akubra (a Snowy River purchased in Sydney) came with a feather. Lost the feather, then the hat, many years ago.
