Repairing Aero 1986 Leather Tear ?

Hi Guys,

I picked up this Aero Motorcycle Jacket today.

It absolutely stinks so I put it in the washing machine on a delicate cold
wash…. It still stinks!

Whilst wearing and stretching it a little I’ve torn the seam.

What would you do in this instance ?
Is there a quick fix ?

All the best,

Ben

It is almost impossible to get rid of the smell. The jacket was probably stored in poor conditions, so the leather became loose and was tearing. I don't think you should waste time with this jacket.

This is a reminder to always ask the seller about odors. I am guilty of forgetting to ask when I see a jacket I like and get excited. Always ask; some smells are darn near impossible to get rid of. Leather gets very weak when soaked through, and seams can fail. Bin it.

To get rid of persistent stink ozone is best, but you must buy an ozone generator. Not terribly expensive, but between that and the cost of repair, the jacket may not be worth the time and expense.

If in Europe, reach out to Aero directly to ask what repairs they could do.

100% agree the smell is likely reason enough to cut your losses and move it along.

If purchased via ebay and the odor (guessing either smoke or musty odor) was not disclosed, I would not modify anything but immediately get a hold of the seller and arrange a return. Good reminder to all of us to also do our best to disclose any odors we observe in our jackets (even normal leather smell).

If the jacket was bought via eBay a return for a refund is not an option now the buyer has actually caused the damage themselves in their efforts to stretch it after washing.

Cigarette stench or something "else"?

Worf
40 years (or there abouts) of solid cigarette smoke and slime.
I didn't really realise but the jacket was so so grimy - it looked awesome, but i had to give it a it of a clean.
Washed on cold in the washing machine, then soaked in bath with some vinegar and water.

A lot of grime came out of the jacket.

I've taken to a local repairs person who may do a bit of a 'bodge' on it, we will see.
If not, will take to a sadlers/cobblers and se what they can do.

Very cool jacket, and got it for a steal. Would be a shame to retire it as the old bloke was nearly in tears passing it on.

I bought in person for a very good price... even if it reeks!
It is a tad small, but looks good
I was giving it a bit of a stretch , and bust one of the seams myself.. whoops!

Two things, Seems like I remember a guy from Aero is a member here so maybe he could guide you. Maybe I am wrong. Also, I am now curious which model you have and some pics of the entire jacket would be nice.
