Shipmates,
Saw a G-1 for sale; seems to be a good price; but the jacket has two stains that appear to be paint. One is on the left side of the back belt and the other is on the right front sleeve. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to remove the stains? Photos posted below:

Thanks for the advice. This seems like a good "beater" jacket...just would appreciate knowing how best to remove the stains.

Cheers,
Mike

You really can't in most instances.

However - if it's water based paint it might come of with a gentle scrub (use a nylon brush or scourer) following a soak in warm soapy water. The leather is chrome tanned so will take the wear ok. You also may be able to simply paint the stain a color match for the leather if you would prefer to blend in rather than remove it entirely. Some might tell you to try rubbing alcohol or acetone (which might take off surface dye too). If in doubt say no.

I agree with Seb. Always start with a gentle method and work up to tougher ones if gentle doesn't work. Try picking and scraping with your fingernail first. If this doesn't work try gentle scraping with the side of an old credit card or membership card. This should remove the paint without nasty solvents which might remove the dye from the leather. Finally any remaining paint might be removed with the gentlest solvent - mild soap and water using a rough cloth of if needed a well used washing up sponge - scoured side. When it's dried feed with pecards or Vaseline. Avoid chemical solvents which might dissolve and spread the paint and leach out dye.

I also agree with Seb and Robrinay's advice.
Painting over the stain would work as I once painted out the ARMY AIR FORCES part of a decal that a patch couldn't cover, and you'd never have known. If the jacket is an otherwise winner and a good price because of the stains that may put most people off, you could have a bargain there - and it wouldn't put me off.

Usually a mixture of Burnt Umber and Black will match a G-1 so any quality acrylic paint would suffice. If there's no body to the paint just paint over, if it's a bump, flake it off. Looks so small that whatever you do isn't really a big deal.
