I do believe that the majority of the German "soldiers" were not so different from Americans and were only doing a job and fighting for their country. Heck, many were probably fighting because they felt they had no choice. I don't believe that the majority of the German fighting force supported death camps and Nazi atrocities.
The human cost was great, on all sides.
