Relative Sizes - How about Stetsons?

Alrighty,
Learning more and more about hats everyday. Quick question on Stetsons. Do their hats run true to size, or do they run larger or smaller?

The reason I've asked is that I've learned (at least for me) that Biltmore's run small (I'm a true 7 5/8 - 24 inches around the noggin) and I wear their 7 1/2. However, with most Borsalino's I've found that I have to size up to 7 3/4, as like italian suits, their sizes seem to run smaller than advertised.

Anyone know if Stetsons, in general are true to size or not?

Much obliged - gee, guess I need to break down and put up an avatar soon....

I recently bought three hats...

i wear a 7 3/8.....the stetson fit like a glove....the borsalino just a bit larger, but still fitting very well....the biltmore was too tight.

hope that helps.

I am a 7 1/8 pretty much. There are some Stetsons that fit me at size 7 -- I have a Stetson cowboy hat that is a 7 and fits perfectly. I do recall a couple of other Stetsons that fit me at the smaller size.

However, my fur felt Stetson fedoras (have a Weekender, a 1984 Indy, and a new Mr. Stetson) all fit at my proper size -- 7 1/8. So do my vintage hats, except the Borsalinos -- an older vintage one is a 7 1/4 and fits perfectly while a newer one is 7 1/8 and somewhat loose. Go figure.

I wonder if some hats, like clothing, are mislabeled in the factory.

Among other brands, some of my 7 1/8 fedoras fit perfectly, some are a teensy bit loose (which is all right with me, would rather than be loose and adjust them than have to have them stretched).

The Akubras fit me fine at size 57, which is also a 7 1/8.

I have two Stetsons that I bought one year apart. One is a 7 3/8 and the other is a 7 1/2. Both fit about the same. It appears that they change a little from year to year. At least that's what the guys at my hat store says.

Hi all. Just when I thought it was safe to stop obsessing about my next hat I found the lounge. It seems informative & fun. Being a newb I am super confused by the sizing charts seen on-line. Is the only real way to do it is to order by the inch & hope for the best pick by the vendor? My limited experience is that Steson runs pretty close to spec, Guerra runs a little larger.

Great information everyone - thanks so much for the feedback.

Sounds like Stetson's do run accurate to size - Borsalino's sound to be hit or miss. Saw the mention about Guerra's running large, which is good - since I was thinking I might get one of them.

It's amazing to me how few and far between vintage 7 5/8 lids are. I guess people just had smaller brains back in the 30's and 40's.

I was asking this same question just the other day, and yes it certainly seems to be true in my case. I usually wear a 7 1/8 in a Biltmore, and a 7 1/4 in a Dobbs. What really gets bothersome sometimes is when I get differences within the same brand.

stetson, dobbs, and resistol are all currently tend to be between 1/2 size and a full size larger than marked. Larger size borsalino's tend to run small lately.
