So I'm back with more questions...Ralphs-Pugh Company? Does anyone know anything about their jackets. I know they were located out of San Francisco, and I believe the one I just picked up is a 30's model due to the zippers (both thanks to @Dinerman). Is anything else known about them?

The label says steer, but some of that graining looks like horse. Maybe because of the age of the hide?

The lining looks to be in excellent condition, especially for a jacket that old. Probably a replacement with the label restitched in the lining.

I'm not sure if it's a replacement lining @Peacoat I found this image online, and it looks to be a similar lining.

Great jacket, great find. Definitely thirties with that zipper. Don't have any information on the company. The Bay Area was full of leather makers in the thirties. looks very much like other jackets pictured in Rin Tanaka's leather jacket books. I looked through both of them but didn't find this label.

from this era do not show up very often. When they do there is much demand.

Do you have an idea of what size it is?

@tmitchell59 I'm not sure of the size, I'd probably have to say a larger 42 or a more snug 44. I also looked through both of Rin Tanaka's books, but didn't see it either.

I found this Ralphs-Pugh Steerhide on ebay, came from London. I saw it by accident made an offer and got it.

I have found three more of the Brand on yahoo japan and one on etsy.

I did some research in city directories, but can't remember the exact dates the company was in business. At least 30s through the 50s. The OP jacket is from the late 30s early 40s, my jacket is 40s.

This jacket is steerhide. I have another bay area police jacket from the 30s that is also steerhide.

Size 42. It has a flair about it.

It certainly is. If I can find that jacket without the side laces I would fork over some loot. Even with the laces it looks a bit more “formal” than my other cop jackets. Something I can wear when not on the bike.

That's just beyond cool Terry. My God man you have this down to a science. Very fortunate that you are able to find such spectacular vintage and have it fit so well. Absolutely classic and very classy cop coat indeed.

I've kinda had a thing with side laces myself. I don't like the side laces with the big oval Kidney panel. This jacket is a bit more subtle and the laces do have a very trimming effect. It is a very nicely tailored jacket, very smart style. Just feels great on. I have gotten the laces adjusted.

The Company made some great jackets. I just pulled some off the web. Problem is that is about all you can do, grab pictures. I don't see many of them coming up now or in the future.

There are a couple for sale in Japan. Right now I'm after something different.

This is the zipper in my Ralphs I showed above. With Talon down the middle of the stop. This indicates mid to late 40s.

This is the jacket.

The label below may be earlier, I'm not sure. This style of "California" labels with mission scenes, palm trees was used on other labels. This sort of "made in California" phrase showed up on jackets with JC Penney, Wards, Hercules labels primarily in the 50s.
