Hey everyone, I just got a Akubra Military Slouch hat off Ebay($50). The hats almost in perfect shape, cleaned it up, put a new bash in it, but the Puggaree was really loose. I took it off and it had a sticker that said size 65?! My hats a 60. The Puggaree is REALLY loose. I tried to shrink it and that didnt work. So my question is, the ones that appear to be after market ones on Ebay and from a few other overseas stores, would a size 60 fit my size 60 hat? Or do they size them up for whatever reason? Also, Ive seen a few of you guys either make your own or have one or two people make these custom. Who are these people and how can I get in contact with them? Thanks.

I bought one for my Akubra Territory that was the same size and it was very tight! I had to wet it with hot water and put it on my hat stretcher a couple of time and it was still very tight going on.

Most any of the custom hatters here would probably make one up and ship it to you to install yourself; it ain't rocket science. ;)

That's a good idea! First person I would try is Bob at Black Sheep Hat Works, though I think he is still on his trek.

No one makes a better pug!

Mustangman, were in La are you? Im in BR. Who else would you guys suggest? Thanks for your help. Bt the way, Im not handy with fabric, so me making one is out of the question. ;)

I'm in Natchitoches.

Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone else who makes traditional pugs.

I bought the green one with the $11.00 BIN and it was well built.
Im a 59 and I ordered the 59-60. As I said before, it took a lot of effort to get it on. You may not be able to get it on a size 60 hat.

The ones from Lawrance Ordnance look pretty nice, and have sizes up to 63 (shipping from Australia to the U.S. costs most than the actual puggaree though.) I'm planning on putting one on my size 60 Akubra Down Under. I wonder if their size 61 or 62 pug would work best?

Ever put a puggaree on a Kakadu?

I was fooling around eBay the other day, looking for a relatively maintenance free alternative to the felt safari hat, and I ran across what's turning out to be a rare bird in the form of an olive green Kakadu Soaka. You don't see the green color on too many websites, even if they sell Kakadu hats.

The look of the hat just screams "safari".

I'm attracted to the toughness and mostly maintenance free aspects of the hat. Heck, you can even wet it to cool your noggin down in the summer.

Then it hit me: to make it look even more "safari", why couldn't you attach a puggaree to it? Never having owned a Kakadu, I could understand if the material is thin enough that the pin at each end of the pug hat band might poke you in the head, but if you carefully anchor it to the braided hat band at each end, why wouldn't it work?

Thoughts?

(No, I haven't been drinking, but thanks for your concern.) :D

Looking to put a puggaree on an Akubra Territory I ordered; does anyone have recommendations on how much material I might need to wrap a decent pug?

Thanks,
A

I went around my Akubra slouch 7 times (one for each fold) plus another foot or two to finish it off. You can always cut the excess off. It's hard to add ribbon if you need more. I learned that the hard way.

It's pretty easy once you get started. Let me know how it works out. Good luck.
