Proper G-1 Jacket Fit?

Yeah most people don’t have to look at those dimensions and good for them haha. Yeah normally a 36 in standard off the rack options. Some styles a 38 if they are a real fitted or have a substantial liner.

@thor being someone who loves G-1s and having seen you wear a couple in the what jacket are you wearing today thread. I’ve traditionally been a biker jacket guy. I’m trying to expand my tastes and the G-1 has been my pick. Without wanting to go to an Aero or Lost Worlds level of jacket at the moment, without knowing how I feel with a G-1 on my frame; although maybe one day if I fall in love with a G-1. Do you or anyone else reading this thread and your myriad of experiences have a favorite mid-price G-1 brand like AVI or Cockpit or any others? Let me know any opinions here G-1 lovers!

If you are specifically looking for a collarless G-1 then I think your choice really is Cockpit. I can’t recall if USW makes a G-1 with removable collar, don’t think so. Not sure what you can get from G&B anymore.

Although it seems that all the Cockpit G-1 types do not use the identical pattern (though there are probably several explanations for the variations), I have found the Cockpit in general to have fairly trim proportions. I have never had a US Wings, but they appear no more tapered than the Cockpit. AVI appears slimmer still, but they don't have removable collars.

The Cockpit Mil Spec G-1 (42R) seems to have changed a bit. Had a 42R about two years ago, and sold it. Big mistake! So just bought another one, and it arrived today. The waist band measures a full two inches wider than the first one...17" versus 15".
All of the other measurements are within a 1/4" or so of being the same. Just two more inches in the waist. I noticed it right away when trying it on, as it was not nearly as "trim fitting" as the previous G-1.
They advertise these as being regular fit, so order your normal size. It seems like the G-1 purchased two years ago was advertised as a slim military fit, and to up-size one.
Has Cockpit increased the "gut" on their G-1's?
This fits overall like my USWings Signature G-1 (44R), not much taper in the body at all. My US Authentic G-1 is a better fit (40R), and looks better when wearing.

About 4 months ago I bought an Excelled G-1 in a size 48L because it was so cheap.
I decided to keep it despite the chest fitting like a size 50 compared to all my 60's and 70's G-1s because it's the only G-1 I have that I can comfortably wear a sweatshirt under.

But I definitely believe that issue G-1s have got bigger per tag size over the years. My repro WWII version is a size 50 and fits trimmer than my 60's and 70's issue jackets.

Cockpit Mil-Spec Navy G-1, size 42R.
These measurements were painstakingly taken, with utmost care. Jacket zipped up, placed flat on a table, face down.

Shoulder = 18.5"
Pit to Pit = 23"
Length = 22" (25.5" including waistband)
Width = 20" (bottom of leather)
Width = 18" (waistband)
Sleeve = 24" (27.5" to end of cuff)

This jacket will be returned, if the 40R is a better fit. Should know soon.

Those shoulder measurements are excellent. Obviously these are sized leaner than their A2's which is a good thing. I understand a tall size is 2 inches longer. Which I need in the body, but not in the sleeve. Hard to imagine a 29.5 inch sleeve being useful to anyone.

Jacky (Owner - CP USA) told me that it's common for there to be a variation from jacket to jacket of 1/2" (+/-) on the same size. That is, my 42R might not be the same as your 42R.

Most jackets have a variation of half an inch. What I am referring to is how narrow 18.5 shoulders are for a Cockpit pattern. The A2's are more like 22 inches at the same size. The hallmark of 'entry point' flight jackets is ususally the wide shoulder effect.

Just stumbled upon this thread and bought a cockpit USA mil spec g1 in size 40L which just came in yesterday. I was so amazed at how well it’s made and how it fits me like a glove and feels like a second skin. Goatskin and mouton collar are very comfortable, sleeves are trim not blousy and the fit is what I would think of as a clean, military fit. I had an Eastman M-422A which had much more beautiful grain and contrast stitching, but didn’t fit me as well. Can’t say I’ve been too keen on cockpit USA jackets before, but this one they nailed!

Nice looking G1. To help us make sense of the photo, Jeep can you post your size and the jacket's measurements. If a 40 fits that roomily, I imagine you are around five nine and 155 pounds? The fit seems ok to me but the sleeves are close to tunnelling - which I why I may need to abort my G1 fantasy.

Yea they’re close to tunneling but I’ve literally been wearing it around my apartment nonstop since I got it and they haven’t gone “full tunnel” (haha did I just invent a term?). The research I did on Cockpit proves true that the arms measure 1-2” longer than the back measurement which is weird since I have seen them be nearly the same in most other makers.

Curious. Your comparative large size seems inconceivable to me. I am six two and 185 pounds and I can't get a jacket with shoulders under 18.5 inches to fit over my actual shoulders and a pit to pit under 23 inches won't zip up. I am a slim build. 27 inch back is ok but 28 inch sleeves are a deal breaker.

No way your jacket would fit me and yet you are bigger than me and it fits you and looks losoe to boot. This metaphysical conundrum must have an answer.
