In fairly recent times ('92), candidate Bill Clinton wore suits with more contemporary lapels and ties with bolder patterns and colors. They made him look considerably younger and more "with it" than George Bush, Sr., who stuck to higher lapels and repp stripe ties.

Interestingly, Clinton dressed more sedately during the '96 campaign.

Sin, I think you have a good point about the suspenders; I hadn't thought of that. Guys like McCain shouldn't even consider it. Maybe Obama and Edwards could handle it.

I think you're also right about the gray suits, however, it's along the same lines as what you said about coveralls; I think there are certain images that come to mind of a corporate take over when someone running for President wears too many gray suits.

I think with a little spice, a gray suit could actually be the perfect choice. Maybe a burnt auburn tie with a wide, sweeping pattern, a white shirt and black cap toes. I think that would look good on anyone.

BTW, I think McCain would need a stingy brim style hat, maybe even a porkpie. I just can't picture him with a wide brim.

I hate to say it, but in all honesty, the press would probably have an absolute field day with a brimmed hat on a presidential candidate. You could probably yank half of the 'dumbest comments' thread and drop it into the evening news broadcasts and pundit shows. Sure, we'd all love to see it, but the mainstream media and likely 75% of the population would view it as an affectation, 'gangster', or just trying too hard.

Willie Brown comes to mind.
