Does the orange reorder tag have Stetson typed on it? Can’t quite make it out, but if not then I’d say it’s not a Stetson at all. Great hat though regardless
Here's another pic of it and no, it doesn't say Stetson. However, I'm including 3 pics of a Stetson on eBay right now and it has a similar tag, also not saying Stetson. We already know Stetson used those 3-panel white tags on some hats. Look at the pics of TheGuitarFairy hat and it does have Stetson on its reorder tag. My reorder tag is unusual looking in it's border design, I admit.Does the orange reorder tag have Stetson typed on it? Can’t quite make it out, but if not then I’d say it’s not a Stetson at all. Late 1930's Stetson 3X Beaver, Tailored Edge. Lot Number 7744. 3 inch brim, 5 1/2 inch open crown. There is a chance this might be an early 40's hat because it has the same Lot Number as a Beaver Twenty Five hat, which supposedly wasn't offered for sale til about 1941.
This same Stetson No. 1 after being cleaned, new sweatband, and being reshaped at Paris Hatters. They also shrank it down about a size.Stetson Number 1 Quality Lot Number 6477, which I estimate dates ca 1932-33. 4 1/2 inch brim, 7 inch open crown. The felt has a beautiful feel. I would have guessed it was a higher grade hat, the felt is so nice.
N. Porter didn’t open in Phoenix until 1940.Stetson Number 1 Quality Lot Number 6477, which I estimate dates ca 1932-33.
Source?N. Porter didn’t open in Phoenix until 1940.
That's interesting, or puzzling, because I don't believe the Lot Number on the sweatband can be from 1940.N. Porter didn’t open in Phoenix until 1940.
My apologies to you & to Mike. I was remembering that they were in Tucson after leaving TX until they opened the downtown store in 1940. Mea culpa!
Meaning what? The binding is still there. It's 3/8 inch or maybe 1/2 inch binding and now makes up the pencil curl, per attached photo.Shame about the brim binding.
Meaning what?
How about a photo of the 1900 logo? There are several versions, I think. Also, look for the Lot Number stamped on the back side of the sweatband, usually up in the front of the sweatband. Will probably be a 4 digit number.Just picked up this hat. I posted this on another thread but I'll add it here too.
Has the 1900 Paris grand prize stamp on the sweatband. Looks like #34 block and 4-1/4" crown height.
I'd be interested to hear any more info about it or guesses on it's age. I read somewhere that the 1900 Paris logo was only used until 1915 but I'm not sure if that's true or not. It's a bit hard to see but here it is. It looks like it saysHow about a photo of the 1900 logo? There are several versions, I think. Also, look for the Lot Number stamped on the back side of the sweatband, usually up in the front of the sweatband. Will probably be a 4 digit number.
This is a hat on the Lounge with a clearer copy of the same logo on your hat. I suspect this logo dates toward the latter part of this design's use, probably somewhere in the 1910's or maybe 1920's. It's not shown in the ca. 1900 Stetson catalog, which shows at least 2 other versions. Looking for that Lot # would also help narrow down the ageIt's a bit hard to see but here it is. It looks like it says
"John B. Stetson Co.
Grand Prize
1900
Paris"

I found a derby from the same era for sale on eBay with a similar looking treatment on the backside of the sweatband but it still has the lot number visible. Maybe it's just worn off over time on mine. Being that it's on a slicker surface the ink may not penetrate as well.It looks like you have some kind of film, etc covering the back side of the sweatband. You should be looking at raw leather.
